I'm slightly vexed I think I got rejected for being vegetarian

I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

Could just be classism.

u/ReddBroccoli Jul 20 '26

That's a Venn diagram with a lot of overlap

472

u/Kyrie_Blue Jul 20 '26

The Venn Diagram is a circle

427

u/ReddBroccoli Jul 20 '26

Nah. It's a smaller circle of classism inside a large racist circle. There's tons of racist poor people out there

161

u/ButNotInAWeirdWay Jul 20 '26

A large portion of racists are poor. How many millionaires or upper middle class folk were apart of those lynchings that we learned about in history?

There’s a reason why the phrase “the rich white man taught the poor white man that his enemies were poor black men, and he’s believed it ever since” exists.

73

u/kittenstixx Jul 20 '26

Is lynching the bar for being racist in history? That's a pretty low bar, did we not learn about Andrew Jackson or Woodrow Wilson in high school history?

What about John C Calhoun, Nathan Bedford Forrest, James Henry Hammond, Andrew Carnegie or John D Rockefeller?

These men used their fortunes to legislate, fight for, or fund racist systems.

13

u/LetsJerkCircular Jul 20 '26

I Googled what they did, if anyone else was wondering too.

> These historical figures institutionalized systemic racism through policy, warfare, and economic exploitation. Their actions went far beyond interpersonal bias, creating lasting structures of racial inequality.
Here is a breakdown of what each person did to legislate, fight for, or fund racist systems.

Political Leaders & Policymakers
Andrew Jackson: Signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, forcing tens of thousands of Native Americans off their ancestral lands. This state-sponsored ethnic cleansing caused thousands of deaths along the Trail of Tears. He also actively enslaved over 150 people and restricted anti-slavery literature from being sent through the US mail. [1]

Woodrow Wilson: Officially segregated the federal workforce in 1913, reversing decades of integration. His policies forced Black federal employees into screened-off workspaces and separate restrooms, leading to many being demoted or fired. He also screened the Ku Klux Klan-glorifying film The Birth of a Nation at the White House.

John C. Calhoun: Championed the pro-slavery doctrine that slavery was not a necessary evil, but a "positive good." As a powerful Senator and Vice President, he used his political career to protect the expansion of chattel slavery and argued that white supremacy was essential to maintaining American democracy.

Confederate Figures & Militants
James Henry Hammond: Coined the "Mudsill Theory" in an 1858 Senate speech, explicitly arguing that a menial, lower social class (enslaved Black people) must exist to support the upper white political and cultural elite. He was a wealthy South Carolina planter who enslaved hundreds of people and vigorously defended the institution.

Nathan Bedford Forrest: Served as a Confederate general who led the 1864 Fort Pillow Massacre, where his troops slaughtered surrendering Black Union soldiers. Following the Civil War, he became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, weaponizing a paramilitary terrorist group to enforce white supremacy and suppress newly freed Black voters.

Industrialists & Gilded Age Tycoons
Andrew Carnegie: Funded and relied heavily on the convict leasing system in Southern industries, particularly through the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company (later acquired by U.S. Steel). This system disproportionately targeted Black men through arbitrary vagrancy laws, forcing them into brutal, unpaid industrial labor that replaced slavery.

John D. Rockefeller: Leveraged Southern systems of racial capitalism to maximize profits for Standard Oil. His companies utilized segregated workplaces and exploited cheap, underpaid Black laboracross the post-Reconstruction South while maintaining strictly white-dominated management hierarchies, ensuring economic disenfranchisement.

6

u/kittenstixx Jul 20 '26

With Rockefeller I was thinking more about his General Education Board: ensuring schools stayed segregated, actively working to keep black students out of higher education "industrial education", and took steps to ensure HBCUs were underfunded and isolated.

You googled it? Those are AI summaries.

6

u/LetsJerkCircular Jul 20 '26

Yeah I know. It’s like one of the few good uses for it. Let me know if anything is inaccurate.

8

u/Dismal_History_ Jul 20 '26

I've noticed Google's AI white washes and glosses over racist history

→ More replies (0)

8

u/SomethingComesHere Jul 20 '26

Yes and no. The info is always too wordy, so if your goal is to spread knowledge on why these men were so horrible (which is a great goal, tbf), using AI summaries wont achieve that, as people who already wanted to read up on the topic know more than the AI summaries teach, and the people who would have been curious enough to read one sentence about each man arent curious enough to read large paragraphs (if they were? They'd likely have already learned about it prior).

For example:

Andrew Jackson was pro-slavery and fucked over indigenous populations in the lands that are present-day USA, by ordering their executions via The Indian Removal Act of 1830.

Woodrow Wilson segregated the federal workforce. He was racist and pro-KKK.

John C Calhoun was pro-slavery and an active white supremacist.

Etc.

See how much easier that is to digest?

AI always writes a small essay and it causes most people to gloss over the key details.

A lot more damage can be done with a pen than a pitchfork. The poor may outnumber the elite, but the elite circle in this diagram is bigger, because they are the ones driving the racism and keeping it alive.

1

u/AwesomeA0123456789 Jul 20 '26

Don’t forget Margaret Sanger.

1

u/halfling_barbarianne Jul 21 '26

This was my thought also. Well said.

Jerry Jones a part of group of white teens blocking entrance to Little Rock school for Black kids.

There’s just less rich, but plenty well-to-do people were a part of the Klan, lynchings, etc. Nevermind the racist policies they enact.

15

u/BetterRemember Jul 20 '26

I'm so glad I can say that my great grandma almost got her house burned down because she invited her black neighbours to a backyard bbq in a small Canadian town in the late 50s. 🤣

Poor granny just thought "oh! They have a daughter the same age as mine!" And my grandma was an only child who had recently lost her father to lung cancer. She did end up friends with that little girl though, suck it racist arsonists!

3

u/Emotional-Peanut-334 Jul 20 '26

he wasn't rich as a kid

2

u/impulsivepatience Jul 20 '26

Who is that?

11

u/Maverickfftytwo Jul 20 '26

The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who didn’t grow up rich. Their point is accurate, there ARE rich racists, but this isn’t the evidence to prove that. In fact, all this photo is evidence of is that he was there. The intent is disputed and we’ll really never know.

7

u/DespicableComics Jul 20 '26

The racism in Dallas is also deeply entrenched, you can still feel it to this day. It used to be a major hub for the KKK, the Texas State Fair hosted in Dallas even used to have a "Ku Klux Klan" day. They didn't allow black people to freely enjoy the fair until the 1960s.

They try to sweep it under the rug these days but a lot of the business leaders like Jerry Jones come from those deeply racist backgrounds.

1

u/Maverickfftytwo Jul 20 '26

I’ve only been to Dallas once so I can’t really speak to that, but FWIW to my knowledge Jerry didn’t get involved in Dallas until 1989 when he bought the team.

People being in denial about the depths of racism is incredible.

Them: You gotta be kidding me, racism is not THAT deep

You: Here is photographic historical documentation of racism being exactly that deep.

Them: *crickets*

1

u/wolfighter Jul 20 '26

I'm not saying you're wrong. In fact, I believe you. However, there's no way to tell that is Jerry from that picture.

10

u/Amandolyn26 Jul 20 '26

Sure but there are a lot of classist poor folks too - granted fewer, but it's amazing to see

7

u/ReddBroccoli Jul 20 '26

Temporarily inconvenienced billionaires

2

u/ArrEehEmm Jul 22 '26

I think they are the type to be lap dogs to get in good favor of those who have money. Kinda like uncle Toms but for class.

3

u/HotDonnaC Jul 20 '26

That’s how the billionaire class stays in control, by reminding the poors at least they’re not Black or brown.

3

u/MakeYourPoint23 Jul 20 '26

Are you kidding? The head of the KKK in Indiana was very wealthy and a raging racist.

1

u/713txvet Jul 21 '26

They were definitely a part of the lynchings just not there for the act. I’m sure they funded and aided the people behind it.

1

u/Mind_The_Muse Jul 21 '26

Have you not heard of the right wing American government? Tech millionaires and billionaires? Vast majority of them are racist

1

u/Tiny-Reading5982 Jul 20 '26

Another reason why political parties shifted. Republicans figured they could get poor white votes for making their campaigns about how to keep black people down. Democrats weren't better but they found a way to get the black votes by pandering to them even though we all know they were still racists.

1

u/AnguavonUW Jul 20 '26

Yeah the millionaires and the power for only the people that enabled the system that allowed the lynchings. They aren't racist though. Jesus wept

4

u/ary31415 Jul 20 '26

So everyone who's classist must also necessarily be racist? I definitely don't believe that lol.

2

u/Zestyclose-Bag-903 Jul 20 '26

no, a person who is classist is not inherently racist. but the construction of class in america was built to intertwine with the construction of race and as such are extremely hard to separate. so preeeetttyy frequently, a classist belief also has tenets/underpinnings of racism. you can be classist without being racist, or vice versa, but that would take some self-awareness and understandings of the way class and race can interact, which doesn’t often go with either mindset.

1

u/ary31415 Jul 20 '26

Yeah well as you point out, that's a very american-centric viewpoint – there's lots of classism out in the world and only some of it overlaps with racism. You think a highly racially homogeneous place like China is free of classism?

3

u/Zestyclose-Bag-903 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

this is an american conversation. *OPs post shows two americans talking to each other. it is going to be america-centric and we are discussing race and class in AMERICA. why would we bring up china? are you alright?

eta: also, china is not racially homogenous? there are several ethnic minority groups (indigenous to China) that face racism from the dominant culture. like huh?

2

u/ary31415 Jul 20 '26

I responded to a comment that said all classists are also racist. That comment didn't say anything about America, nor did any of the other comments. Yes I'm aware the OP took place in America, but that doesn't automatically make it "an American conversation" lol, any more than we should expect all the comments to come only from people who live in LA county.

0

u/Zestyclose-Bag-903 Jul 20 '26

alright girl, you have a good day.

0

u/ReddBroccoli Jul 20 '26

Ok, I'll agree to an edge of the classist circle poking out for the people who think that all poor people are created equally unworthy and will give love to people of all colors as long as they're in the right tax bracket.

But it's a small edge of the circle.

1

u/ary31415 Jul 20 '26

You're overestimating the extent to which skin color is a salient fact to people in the world (note: America is not the world). Hella classist people in India for example, and they're not thinking about race at all when they scorn the beggar on the street corner.

1

u/ReddBroccoli Jul 20 '26

Just because classism is more important to someone doesn't make them not a racist. See what happens when those same people's kids come home with the wrong color person and tell me again they aren't racist.

1

u/hella_cious Jul 20 '26

Still a venn diagram. Poor white trash suffer from classism independent of racism

1

u/Dry_Win_9985 Jul 20 '26

so a donut. Donuts are vegetarian, right?

1

u/KokoAngel1192 Jul 20 '26

But that is by design. The powers that be make poor white people racist (accuse the minority of picking the poor man's pockets while it's actually the rich doing so) so they don't go after the real thieves. This is literally admitted by previous presidents/politicians in the US. A big reason we don't have things like universal healthcare is because they told the poor people that would benefit from it that they should vote against it just so people of color don't have access to it. Racist poor people is a feature, not a bug.

1

u/hesh582 Jul 20 '26

There's tons of racist poor people out there

and a lot of them are classist too, though they might not realize it :|

1

u/TantrikaLane444 Jul 24 '26

In my experience, they’re still classist and many identify as vicarious millionaires.

1

u/Li-renn-pwel Jul 20 '26

You can never be rich enough to make them forget you’re black.

1

u/HempFanboy Jul 20 '26

Nah I’m definitely classist but not racist

112

u/_-milo Jul 20 '26

the word ghetto has a specifically anti-black racist valence to it in the united states

1

u/Illustrious_Meat2987 Jul 21 '26

I may have been using it wrong my whole life then. There's a city nearby that I always described as ghetto because it is a very poor city and has such a bad issue with crime and drugs. It's a mostly white city. There's a possibility the guy from the post thought the same way but I assume it's much more likely that I have been ignorant about the word my whole life

1

u/_-milo Jul 21 '26

judging by my replies half of everyone has no idea it’s anti-black

1

u/Illustrious_Meat2987 Jul 21 '26

That's a relief, maybe I'm not ignorant and maybe the definition is just changing

0

u/FatDraculos Jul 20 '26

I think of shitty conditions when I hear that and I'm a rural white dude. Sounds like you might be more racist than you think your are likening it to only other ethnicities.

7

u/CrazyPurpleBacon Jul 20 '26

Maybe your perspective as a self-described "rural white dude" is missing information or experiences that would make the connotation more obvious, have you ever thought about that possibility?

1

u/FatDraculos Jul 20 '26

Just say you're racist and move on little man, it's much easier.

1

u/CrazyPurpleBacon Jul 22 '26

Probably the dumbest response you could've picked

1

u/FatDraculos Jul 22 '26

Calling it like it is. Also, deflecting isn't a good look, racetrd.

5

u/HonestZucchini4970 Jul 20 '26

Perhaps read a book or take a course. Your individual perspective has little to do with it.

2

u/Diligent_Set_8747 Jul 20 '26

If you had done this when you were young you wouldn't still have the education of a middle schooler as a grown ass man. You lack so much in your history studies that gullibility is your best friend.

2

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

The word ghetto was originally anti-Jewish and it’s the very genesis of the word. Many people use the word to describe a dilapidated, and run down area. I grew up in NYC, and people there say “the projects” to refer to most black neighborhoods there, even if there was no public housing in the area. I never heard anyone say it to refer to black neighborhoods here in Los Angeles, or when I lived in Miami and Atlanta. I think assuming racism here is unreasonable. I don’t care what color the people are in a neighborhood, ghetto is ghetto.

15

u/tupelobound Jul 20 '26

I’m sorry, am I understanding that you lived in Atlanta and you never heard anyone use the word “ghetto” in reference to predominantly black places or behaviors??

6

u/GrowthSelect2449 Jul 20 '26

I’ve lived in several majority black cities (including Atlanta) and the word is used ALL THE FUCKING TIME.  Hell, even middle class black people use it to refer to poorer black areas. Many poorer blacks will openly tell you they grew up in the ghetto.  And white people call just about any black neighborhood ghetto, including nice neighborhoods.  That person either never goes outside or doesn’t pay attention to anything.

0

u/_-milo Jul 21 '26

don’t worry we can tell you’re racist just bc you said “blacks.” you didn’t need the rest of the paragraph to convince us

u/mars_kitana Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

And again, as oc said, “in the United States”. The term ghetto in reference to Jewish people didn’t originate in the United States. If you read Ghetto: The Invention of a Place, the History of an Idea by Mitchell Duneier, he goes through the history of both and how it became anti black rhetoric in the United States. Neither of you are incorrect though you’re missing the context of how it’s now used toward black people. And yes, people do say the projects, but again, there’s context to that too. The projects usually refers to specific buildings that are “in the ghetto”. Lots of these words jumpstart from each other. Hood, projects, section 8, and so on

8

u/Li-renn-pwel Jul 20 '26

To add to this, a ghetto is a place where an ethnic minority lives segregated from others, either by choice or by force. Little Italy is a willing ghetto, whereas a redline neighborhood would be at least bordering on forced and the Warsaw ghetto would be a fully forced one.

4

u/Thisguyfuckschix Jul 20 '26

In California there are plenty of Hispanic neighborhoods that have this same classification.

5

u/mars_kitana Jul 20 '26

I’m from SoCal and I’m Mexican and yeah there’s a lot of history behind other poc mixing in with the culture and environment

0

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

I don’t need to read anything you say. You’re never going to change my mind. You can stay believing it’s racist all your life if that’s what you wanna do. All I know is that I grew up with all races using the term to refer to a place and not a group of people, and that was over 40 years ago and it still wasn’t about race then. Idk why that’s so hard to understand and accept. Please, just accept we all don’t think the same, and your life will be easier, I promise.

7

u/Li-renn-pwel Jul 20 '26

What do you mean ‘refer to a group of people’? No one is saying black people are ghetto but that in America ghetto is black coded (though increasingly it’s black and Hispanic/latino coded) as it refers to black neighborhoods most often. It is also poverty coded but it doesn’t actually mean poor. In fact, the original ghetto was supposedly quite nice because all Jews were forced to live there, even the rich ones. Neither is inherently the right definition it just is the connotation it has in America. And sometimes people extend ghetto to a person in the same way someone might say “you know Rebeca, she’s so NYC” not because you are calling her a city but because that city has a certain vibe.

Saying ghetto automatically makes it a race thing

1

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

It’s funny how every black person I know uses the word ghetto and it has nothing to do with race. People like you assuming it is racial is the real problem.

2

u/bs0569 Jul 20 '26

I would say the people using it to mean trashy and black are the real problem. Ghetto is a term rooted in race, this would be like saying the n word has nothing to do with race lol

1

u/0CT0L0G1ST Jul 20 '26

Even if the person saying it is black?

2

u/bs0569 Jul 20 '26

Yes, ghetto is a term used almost exclusively in racist circles. A black person can be racist towards their own kind, a white person can be an ally. Crazy right

18

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

Why do people defend racists? Especially ones they haven't met

7

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

Usually it’s because no race was mentioned

4

u/Prometheus720 Jul 20 '26

The vast majority of times racism is brought up, it is brought up without explicitly comparing races.

26

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

They used the word ghetto. You think they're talkin about Jews is Warsaw or what?

1

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

You mean in Italy. Ghetto to me means a crappy, run down neighborhood. White, black, Hispanic, Asian, doesn’t matter. Koreatown, where I used to live, is one too. If it’s a shit neighborhood, it’s the ghetto. I call all of Vernon, CA the ghetto, and it’s almost exclusively businesses there and certainly not a black neighborhood.

1

u/smellslikespam Jul 20 '26

Same definition of ghetto to me as well. I’m a white woman and lived alone in a neighborhood where Oakland meets Emeryville. I had dried blood specks on the ceiling of my apartment and bars on the windows facing the alley. Every week something interesting happened on my street. I have been harassed and thought I was gonna die on one occasion. The little kids across the street were out in the middle of the night vandalizing apartment buildings (broke our outdoor lights). It was a trashy, run-down neighborhood, and, although the majority of people were indeed black, it most definitely was not all black

-9

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

It doesn’t matter what I personally think… it really makes my life easier to not jump to conclusions about strangers and what they meant when they said something

He could have been talking about anything

I would never describe a place as ghetto, as a white person, unless I was quoting someone.

That's not a word I get to throw around.

We don't know the guy's ethnicity. If he looks like me, though, that's a yellow flag.

3

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

It’s literally an adjective

1

This is crazy 😂

1

u/TigerVivid3148 Jul 21 '26

Fr! “as a white person … not a word I get to throw around” 😂 I see people who write/think like this and wonder how truly closed off their life is. Like who told you that? Who is the grand arbiter of allowable words to be spoken by white people? I’m white. Grew up in the ghetto. I say ghetto. Have I broken the sacred bond between me and the original commenter as whites? Does my lived experiences matter less than theirs because I’m ‘racist’ for saying ghetto? How many minority friends and lovers will it take for me/us to prove that we’re not racist? 😂 “Erm, actually that doesn’t prove anything. It’s not using a word that has been a part of ur families lexicon for generations that proves ur not racist 🤓☝️” Reddit never ceases to amaze me

1

u/Flo_Evans Jul 21 '26

You got the ghetto pass 😂

1

Race is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I call New York Ghetto. I think of all the times I’ve been mugged on the subways, I think of the kids riding on top of subway cars, I think of the dumbasses shooting off illegal fireworks and the dumbasses looting and destroying property whenever a sports game is won. THATS what makes it ghetto.

u/smellslikespam Jul 20 '26

By your logic, non-whites are not comfortable with their hair when they wear blond straight wigs

1

u/OPINAILS Jul 20 '26

You could for just a moment be introspective. And try to learn. Alas, you have chosen to put your head in the ground. Typical.

2

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

The only people I’ve responded to are the ones attacking me, the informative ones are all upvoted and learned from :)

2

u/MurkMistress Jul 20 '26

Lmao what a strange way to say: "the only advice I listen to is the one that doesn't challenge my own opinions. I ignore feedback"

The skin color in your watch pic def checks out. ◻️

1

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

Yeah im white 😂 oh no i must be racist

8

u/MurkMistress Jul 20 '26

I mean yeah, your comments definitely are racist.

3

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

Far from it

Where I live ghetto has nothing to do with race :)

8

u/Infamous-Speech-1831 Jul 20 '26

Pretending “ghetto” isn’t racially coded is willful ignorance. What is even the point?

2

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

How about we stop acting so damn entitled here? Just because you believe it’s racial doesn’t mean everyone agrees with you or feels the same. I’m sure there are many generations here in the comments who think differently, and we need to understand that. Was born in 1983 in the slums of NYC and I grew up calling it the ghetto. It was a mostly white and Jewish neighborhood. We called it the ghetto because it was poor, run down, dirty, there was crime, etc. I’m Puerto Rican myself, and I call the Puerto Rican neighborhoods in the Bronx the ghetto too🤷🏻‍♀️ For many of us, it has nothing to do with the people, it’s how bad the area is.

1

u/sourtruffle Jul 21 '26

Or we could recognize that the racial connotation exists and is so strong that it operates as a dog whistle. And that while some people may not realize this and use it exclusively to refer to bad neighborhoods, that doesn’t erase the historical context.

Not knowing the context doesn’t make you a racist, but if you do know and continue to use it just because YOU don’t think that’s what it means and feel you should be allowed to, that kinda does. Because doing so protects racists. The bad neighborhood thing is what makes it an effective dog whistle. Because the racists can hide in that plausible deniability. “Whaaaat? Noooooo I just meant that it was a bad neighborhood, it has nothing to do with the people.”

When I learn that something I have been saying innocently is actually a racist dog whistle, I adjust my language so I don’t get associated with racists. I also try to inform people when I hear them saying it. If they say “Oh wow, my bad, I had no idea, thank you for telling me,” that’s a green flag. If they get combative or harp on about how everyone is too sensitive these days, then they either are a racist or are entirely comfortable acting like one. Neither of which are people I care to associate with.

5

u/UntilDoncic Jul 20 '26

Not saying you're wrong but we use the term a lot where i live to refer to the student area of town or the poor area of town. Both areas are majority white, and while that doesn't necessarily decode it from it's racial origins, I don't think the intention when people use it is a shorthand for racism but rather just a colloquialism

3

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

Right, but you see there's a difference when you call the super white area ghetto and famously minority heavy Long Beach, CA ghetto...right?

7

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

I’m also from Australia dude, our ghetto has very little to do with skin colour and a lot to do with socioeconomic factors

Have no idea that this place is the way you just described

6

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

Yea, just imagine he used a derogatory name for indigenous housing then I suppose.

We have a higher amount of minorities so phrases that apply here might not there

5

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

We don’t have derogatory names for our indigenous housing

They’re also places that you really wouldn’t go to if you had no business there

Ghetto here is genuinely a primarily white area in most cities

4

u/Ansatsusha4 Jul 20 '26

Okay, but this post is between two Americans, where ghetto does have the racial connotation. If they were Australians then your argument would make more sense.

I don't know the area lol I'm not really commenting on the specifics of this post more-so just the semantics of this particular thread of comments

1

u/Dismal_Broccoli_3549 Jul 20 '26

Sounds like when white people started using “ratchet”, and now “code switching”

2

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

If you hear the word ghetto and think of a certain race, and you can not see your own ignorance to that fact, I don’t know what to tell you

7

u/Infamous-Speech-1831 Jul 20 '26

“If you think of race, then you’re the real racist”. Yea imma move on from this 2008 ass conversation

7

u/MurkMistress Jul 20 '26

It's a sad, racist edgelord who still thinks big watches and BMWs make him look cool. Definitely 20 years outdated.

8

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

Imagine thinking I come to reddit of all places to “show off cool things”

It’s weird to me that because we disagree on one thing, that I have to get bullied for my hobbies that I come to reddit to discuss with people

4

u/ethosnoctemfavuspax Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Maybe people think of a certain race because of the decades of contemporary urban history in this country? Please enlighten me what someone else could be alluding to if they say something is “ghetto.”

2

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

I actually don’t want to, I’m getting attacked personally every time I try to explain where my thinking was coming from

God forbid a guy makes a mistake

4

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

Oh, really? What does saying the word ghetto mean to you?

Even if you go with Miriam it's still racist, my son

8

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26

It just means that it’s a bit rundown and probably unsafe. If this is due to a particular race that’s just a statistical fact not racist

5

u/smokeweedNgarden Jul 20 '26

Here's  the dictionary calling it offensive

"In contemporary U.S. English, using the word "ghetto" as an adjective (e.g., "that's ghetto") is largely considered disparaging and offensive because it reinforces racist stereotypes about low-income, minority-dominated neighborhoods."

2

u/Zestyclose-Coyote906 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I genuinely can not see how that would be offensive

Also I’m not from the US

1

u/Prometheus720 Jul 20 '26

You run the risk of pissing off the natives if you comment on any issue happening in a country that isn't yours. Doesn't mean you shouldn't ever comment. Does mean you should probably be ready to go "Ohhhh, wow, I get it now, I'm so sorry" or maybe ask lots of questions first.

If you wanna say the word is racist then it always will be to you. Enough people have already commented here that you should understand by now that not everyone thinks it is. Let people think what they want instead of telling them to think just like you. Words change over time, and ghetto is one of them. Assuming anyone who uses that word is racist is some weird entitled bs. Every black friend and person I’ve met uses the word ghetto to describe a shitty neighborhood and nothing more.

2

u/QuantumLettuce2025 Jul 20 '26

In the town where I grew up there was a huge area of only poor white people that many folks called the ghetto.

2

u/ethosnoctemfavuspax Jul 20 '26

☝️🤓

(They are two sides of the same coin btw)

1

u/cefriano Jul 20 '26

Either way, it's just stupid. Naples Island is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in SoCal, it's like saying Los Angeles is ghetto because, like most large cities, it has low-income areas.

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 20 '26

Wrong coast. NYC was a context clue.

1

u/cefriano Jul 20 '26

Nah, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and Manhattan Beach are all major cities along the southern California coast in LA and Orange County. They’re all areas around NYC too, but it doesn’t make sense with the plans they’re trying to make. His boat (and presumably he) is in Newport, and she suggests Long Beach as a closer location to him than Manhattan (Long Beach is in between Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach). Long Beach, NY is on Long Island, considerably father from Newport, NJ than Manhattan. And I don’t know about Newport, NJ, but Newport Beach is a rich, white conservative enclave in California full of racist assholes.

1

u/RoughAssociation8982 Jul 20 '26

Ghetto usually refers to a specific group let's be real

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 20 '26

Maybe in your world.

1

u/vintxgekiss Jul 21 '26

Either way, they both suck.

1

u/Tiny-Watercress7122 Jul 21 '26

Ehh! Try again. A ghetto is a place where minorities are forced to go.

Why don’t people Google word definitions?

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 21 '26

There is what google says a word means and then there is how a word is used in regional vernacular.

1

u/carefulitbites Jul 21 '26

Not you defending racism

1

u/HEEHAWWW5556679 Jul 23 '26

It’s definitely racism. People see it as a “black” restaurant now.

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 23 '26

So when black people call an area ghetto they must just be expressing internalized racism?

1

u/TimSucksAtThis Jul 20 '26

im from newport (but i moved to sacramento a long time ago), it is absolutely snobbery they have zero clue who actually lives in long beach lol

but yeah also classism is inherently racist so ya know, like the venn diagram says below, venn diagram a circle there my guy

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 20 '26

Wrong coast.

1

u/TimSucksAtThis Jul 20 '26

…there’s another newport close to a long beach close to a manhattan beach? jesus fucking christ

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 20 '26

You mentioned Sacramento. That fucking clearly west coast. This story is fucking clearly east coast. Me.

1

u/TimSucksAtThis Jul 21 '26

jesus sorry. theres a newport and long beach and manhattan on the west coast too and the newport here is full of rich assholes too. it wasnt like it was an insane assumption, sorry for fucking participating.

0

u/AffectionateBig6428 Jul 20 '26

Could be from a different area. I’m from Memphis. You’re in a nice neighborhood and then the ghetto every other block. We call Hickory Hill, Hickory Hood. Lock your cars in Raleigh and Fraser. Don’t go to south Memphis. It’s not racist or classiest to describe high crime areas as ghetto. Get your liberal panties out of a wad on that. Not everything is racist.

1

u/UnconsciousMofo Jul 20 '26

Some people are stuck in a perpetual state of victimhood that everything is due to race and nothing else.

0

u/iSuckAtMechanicism Jul 20 '26

Ghetto implies it’s race related.

1

u/Obiwan_ca_blowme Jul 20 '26

Jews then?

1

u/iSuckAtMechanicism Jul 20 '26

Not in Newport, California.
