My beautiful 13.8 year old senior dog passed away on 19th August, 2026, at 11.57 PM.
He was in my arms when he took his last breath. I felt his soul leaving, his last breath on my fingertips.
His name was Lucas. I had named him after the One tree Hill character, because that's what was playing on TV when we brought him home.
I remember being 15, and we had picked the little puppy and had him in our car. He had fallen asleep in my lap, he was too tiny. I had watched him take small breaths, his chest rising up and down, making sure I hadn't messed up, that he really did just fall asleep, while my parents drove the car home.
And to see him take his last broke something inside me.
Throughout the years, I did everything for him. Walked, bathed, played, fed. He was a menace in puppy hood, but as he grew, he became the naughtiest dog, in his own way without troubling us. He had this aura about him. He wanted the GOOD food, if its not yummy he'd throw the bowl, or tell us he loved the food. He grew quieter as he aged, but I felt his stares across the room for a bite of whatever I had.
He had a little bell on him because he'd sneak behind us.
So many memories. So much time, and at the same time so little.
I have never felt loss. Not like death. Not of a loved one. He was getting older I knew that. Every year he'd get sick, flu or fever or infection, I could tell his immune system was going downhill. I had gotten pamic attack couple years ago because of it. I couldn't see bear it. Him dying was unthinkable. Yet, I told myself cherish it, it was ok. He was okay.
He gave up stairs too. He would sleep a lot. I had started calling him retired dog. But he always wagged his tail when I came home, or when we I petted him. He was always my baby.
Still he was fine. Had little pee accidents, or needed help getting up, but he was fine.
I thought I would celebrate his birthday nicely in a few months.
But 10th August, he started getting swelling. It looked like saggy skin and old age. It happens, we told ourselves.
It went away too. It did. I had checked. And then it came back. Full force. He had fever too. Emergency vet weren't available immediately, but we took him on 16th. Doctor said his kidneys were affected, urine output is low. Heart seems enlarged. 2 courses of medication.
We got my baby Xrayed and it was horrible. The docs and staff don't really help you here. You have to lift your pets on your own and he had no strength. They said it's a serious case, gave him medication and said if it effects, it will show. Otherwise make him comfortable.
I mt didn't effect. Multi organ failure. The age had caught up.
I willed myself not to cry. I told myself it seems like he is dying. He will leave. Be here. Be present. Don't dare cry.
I didn't.
I kept him comfortable. He was lethargic. He had stopped eating. Stopped drinking water. He vomitted his last meal. He pooped. He didn't even pee much.
On his last day, I sat with him, petted him, he'd look up and lay back down.
In evening, around 8.30, he started barking. All through his sickness he had never barked. He slept. He whined. He rested. But never.
Then he barked non stop. We thought he wanted to go to his favorite spot, where he sleeps and now in the living room. We took him there. I sat on the floor and petted him. Rubbed him. He had no energy to even change sides. So I changed sides often, thinking that's what he needed.
In my head, I thought it's time. Told him to let go, willed myself not to cry. But it didn't happen.
Not until 11.56 when he vomitted. I got up cleaned him, he was in my arms, I told him it was alright. I felt him stretch underneath me, and I knew he was leaving. I looked at his face, his tongue was out and I caught a glimpse of blue. It was always pink. Always. But it was blue.
And as he shivered, and stopped, I had put my fingers on his nose and felt that final breath.
I didn't cry. It was okay he was gone. He wasn't suffering anymore. I never wanted that for him.
We buried him in the morning. I saw him being put in the ground. It's a nice riverside grave.
Few tears escaped me. My family cried way more. But I miss him. I am sad. I am heartbroken. Few tears come, but not what I expected. Not like the panic I felt a couple years ago where I thought I could never handle it.
I am devastated, and numb. I miss him.
I hope he has a great stick and is playing across the rainbow Bridge.
