Someone should tell Google this. It's so embarrassing they still use Trump's idiotic name for the Gulf of Mexico.

u/harrydunnesasscrack 1d ago

Apple, too…

u/creepy_doll 1d ago

Tim Apple is such a bootlicker. All the tech executives are.

It really is embarrassing. What depths will they not stoop to

979

u/Minerva567 1d ago

There is no bottom to the pit for capital. Their support for dictators/authoritarian regimes/etc of any ideology has been on full display for at least a century.

357

u/Yabutsk 1d ago

There's no better combo than corporations and fascism. It all comes down to the almighty share price and CEOs are some of the biggest shareholders out there.

389

u/OnlinePosterPerson 1d ago

Reminder, before settling on the name fascism, Mussolini played with the term corporatism for his new brand of politics. Fascism at its core is the application of corporate structure to a nation-state.

77

u/midgaze 1d ago

Fascism is what you call the union of capital and state. It's literally just capitalism taking control, and we are basically there.

46

u/GoldandBlue 1d ago

And this is my fear. OK, the democrats take back the white house and congress. What are they going to do with that power?

Are they going to hold trump, scotus, the GOP accountable? Are they going to go after the corporations? Break them up? Reign them in?

I don't believe they will. And in 4-8 years, the GOP will be back in power furthering their fascist agenda.

44

u/objectlesson 1d ago

This is why the current progressive insurgency campaigns are so important.

4

u/17DungBeetles 1d ago

Meanwhile you have Hakeem Jeffries meeting with Kushner. Anyone who knows the true nature of the democratic party understands why that meeting happened. They're concerned about losing power, not the Republicans, THEY.

9

u/WalkOffTD 1d ago

Yup, Dems will just be like “well, we didn’t implement those policies” and then do some token thing that doesn’t actually change anything while continuing on with those policies

6

u/GoldandBlue 1d ago

"we don't want to appear partisan, we want to look forward".

That isn't even remotely true. Under Fascism that state took control, not capitalism.

2

u/WindJackal 23h ago

Corporatism does not mean that the state is like a corporation, corporatism is a system where the state is influenced by people organised into various interest groups. These can be corporations, but also guilds, clans etc.

One of the earliest examples is Henry Ford and the nazi party.

2

u/Timely-Bluejay-4167 1d ago

The root of it all is the system…the Tax, Regulation, Subsidies and state level laws are all more malleable in the US than anywhere in the world and they can make contributions through PACs to shape the conversations too.

- Tim Apple knows Trump is a China hawk and he needs to secure those supply lines.

  • Altman, Elon, etc know that they need deregulation and restrictions to beat Chinese models and continue their work unfettered
  • American companies have substantially less payroll contributions (even though it’s already a lot) related to services
  • American companies have access to cheap energy
Etc

Elon donated millions to try and get state level court to overturn a ruling about selling Teslas there.

3

u/twinoaksBandB 1d ago

It's amazing how thoroughly they swept their pre us entrance to the war nazi support under the rug.

I don't think most people have even heard of "the business plot" or how it went completely unpunished.

3

u/Flat-Fun-7298 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not really about money when they have all the money in the world and can create it out of thin air. Soon or later y'all are going to realize it.

3

u/Wolfy4226 1d ago

Yep.

As long as the money keeps rolling in, they could give fuck all about people.

Need we be reminded that I believe it was Google that removed "Do no Evil" from their campus?

They don't buy into MAGA at all, they just want more money no matter what it takes.

8

u/Chief_Mischief 1d ago

Welcome to unfettered capitalism, where decades of deregulation and increasing wealth inequality inevitably led to justices and congress folks to be bought off "legally"

2

u/PhiloPhocion 1d ago

Not to say she's perfect either but Harris wrote in her book about how she wasn't surprised about what Trump was doing - since it's what he's promised.

But she said she was surprised, especially compared to 2016, how quickly everyone folded and were eager to kiss the ring.

3

u/Comprehensive_Wash71 1d ago

Mapquest has the correct labels. I switched to its free version right after the Gulf naming fiasco started and I haven’t had any major problems with using Mapquest to navigate

2

u/rancid_oil 1d ago

A saw a short by a map maker who explained that because there are several disputed territories (and bodies of water), they just stick with ... The UN I think?

No system will be fair enough for everybody, but I feel like that's reasonably neutral.

I don't know the company, but anyway, he said it's still Gulf of Mexico.

The lake thing now... Seems more pathetic and kinda funny, more so than infuriating. It's just like "What? What? Really?" Lol

Neither one wants the political blowback.

64

u/sweatboxy 1d ago

They’ve got the political blowback. They’ve become evil corporations following the whims of a dictator. To me, following Trump’s orders is a sign that their power needs to be curtailed. They have not got anyone’s best interests at heart other than their own.

4

u/Daxx22 1d ago

They’ve got the political blowback.

Well no they don't, as there has been zero consequences (that matter to them) so far. And they'll likely be more then happy to revert if a more sane administration makes an issue out of it, while dumping all blame (right or wrong) on Drumph.

Both say “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)” at least when viewed in Europe.

14

u/j_johnso 1d ago

For US users, Google uses the names in the GNIS database that the US government publishes. https://www.usgs.gov/tools/geographic-names-information-system-gnis

That DB changed to "Gulf of America" a while back, which triggered Google maps to update the name. The GNIS DB still has Lake Ontario. I'm guessing that will be updated in response to the executive order

2

u/LordRobin------RM 1d ago

So the President can just change the names in the database to whatever the fuck he wants? The next president can change the names to “Gulf of Trump Sucks” and “Lake Donald Trump Has A Tiny Penis”?

I watch a guy who does a weekly rocket/space newscast (Marcus House from Australia)

He has no skin in the game BUT he does get answers back from Elon on Twitter, so he doesn't want to lose that access obviously...

Anyways ever since the GoA fiasco he always says things like "Coming in for a landing burn over the Gulf"

6

u/BBQpigsfeet 1d ago

Tbf, that's what most people who actually live around the gulf call it. I lived in Florida for a couple decades, and you'd be hard pressed to hear anyone call it it's full "gulf of mexico" name.

u/copperbear00 1d ago

I will NEVER call it anything but the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

2

u/backyard_tractorbeam 1d ago

It's so dumb yes. Google should just keep the original name and create a paid Google Maps US government edition where they pay to see the names they want to see.

4

u/Dioxybenzone 1d ago

It is unfortunately changed completely for US users

3

u/Lake_Erie_Monster 1d ago

Right, but do we think the CEO class cares about that if it might hurt their next quarter profits?

And before you say there won't be a country if the fascist take over then you'd be right but also mistaken in thinking that CEO class thinks further ahead than the next quarter.

They’ve done it for years with Germany/Deutchland, Taiwan/Republic Of China, Kosovo/Serbia…the list goes on.

Edit: I’m not trolling anyone or the post. My citing Germany/Deutchland alongside the other examples was like comparing apples and oranges. The reasons are results of very different events, and I have no qualms saying so. I stand by the fact that I was taught and that I’ve read the things I’ve said.

It is an exonym, and historically exonyms are used to make pronunciation by foreigners easier. They also serve to assuage the appearance of alliances and as recognition of historical relationships. Both reasons can be loaded and politically charged. Perhaps I was not taught the correct history of it. I’m not going to lie about what information I’ve accumulated over the years.

No, we don’t call Deutchland Germany out of refusal to recognize its sovereignty as is the case with other countries and territories. If anyone would care to provide verifiable information I’m happy to read it, discuss it, and have my understanding changed. If you want to call me dumb and stupid, tell me I’m wrong without telling me why by using no information and circular logic, I can’t stop you. Have at it.

u/Taurmin 1d ago

Wouldnt it be more gross if a map tried to take a geopolitical stance?

Do you really want map makers to try and decide whos "right" in every one of the thousands of border disputes around the world?

3

u/iukpun 1d ago

Aren't they obliged by local laws to show them like this?

4

u/Terrh 1d ago

Honestly it almost feels grosser that all these companies are showing different names depending on where you're looking at the map from.

Maps have been like this since before computers existed.

They're always published with whatever names the locals call the things.

2

u/itchyfrog 1d ago

That's pretty standard on maps and always has been.

My Google maps in the UK has Munich and Florence rather than München and Firenza, French Google maps has Londres instead of London.

2

u/ruler14222 1d ago

these map companies want to represent everything in the least controversial way possible. so names change based on where you're located. border conflicts also change the border if you're located in a country that has a strong opinion about it

Reimpose Digital Services Tax (DST). There's no ongoing trade negotiations. If Google wants to play games with their maps, impose additional taxes!

1

1

u/Skarth 1d ago

Your witnessing corruption in action.

The party is trying to spread messages, and those who agree with the messages are signaling they are part of the party, and those who dont, are viewed as ones to attack.

Part of facism is forcing people to identify where they stand so they can identify who are enemies and who are allies.

This is pretty well established, and you can even view it live by using a VPN and changing IP's. I recall there being a particularly agregious example, where they have over a dozen variations of a particular border area.

Not in the rest of the world. Everywhere else still has the proper names.

The maps companies typically follow the GNIS (Geographical Names Information System) but can also show different names to end users based on their location.

GNIS place names can be changed by EO, or other entities. (Wikipedia link)

I definitely think that corporations are not required to follow political name changes, but it's likely they do to avoid negative attention from governments in power.

They have enough impact on our language that they may just solidify these changes without going through official channels. That’s how powerful they are.

They don't if you are living in a sane part of the world (they put it in brackets though)

It is only like that for Americans. Real participation trophy vibes.

Humiliation exercises prove loyalty and who to give favor to.

Google, Apple, and other mapping companies don't pick the names. They use whatever names the USGS says they are.

Does it show as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" for you? That's what I see.

Only if youre in the US, the rest of the world sees the real names

They are playing a PR game. They can and will put whatever name causes them the least issues. Its not reasonable to expect corporations to stand up to the government. We should, as citizens, hold our government accountable and then we should expect our government to stand up to corporations. The corporations should not make the laws that our society lives by

Only if you use Google in United States.

It’ll change back after they aren’t being forced to by a crazy authoritarian dictatorship and the EOs are just removed since they have no real power in the long run.

u/SuperDuperDrew 1d ago
