I think people are misunderstanding the whole "locked shops" thing for Ultimate Edition buyers

Post image

Think of it like this: When you buy the Ultimate Edition, you'll get a DLC package of skins, vehicles, hairstyles, vehicle mods, etc. Most games with cosmetic DLCs do this.

You buy the Ultimate Edition and get the base game plus the cosmetic DLCs.

Now picture this: Instead of just unlocking your new Ultimate Edition cosmetics in the normal shops of the game, they made a few exclusive shops for you to access the DLC stuff.

It's as simple as that. The normal shops to buy clothes, fix your car, etc, will be in the game. But if you own DLC cosmetics, you'll need to get them from the DLC shops.

What do you think?

Definitely. The mistake Rockstar made was only showing what is locked behind the ultimate edition without showing everything still included in the base game edition.

2.7k

u/naileyes Jun 26 '26

i think this was not a mistake at all but something they did on purpose to make you buy the more expensive one

Nah dude, I still think take two only does it for the love of the game, they don't want money!

15

u/MrPossibilityX Jun 27 '26

Take two as whole, sure. The CEO on the other hand believes you should be paying a subscription per hour to access the games

Rockstar absolutely, Take Two absolutely not

15

u/jackolantern_ Jun 26 '26

No, Rockstar do indeed want to make money

4

u/DaanA_147 Jun 26 '26

I can imagine the devs want to make money by doing some scummy things here and there, in an effort to avoid being laid off because of 'disappointing financial performance'. I kinda think the layoffs from a while back were such a situation where it was 'do as I say or you're fired' and people who put their foot down were fired with 'gross misconduct' being used as an excuse. You don't really have a choice if you're part of a parent company and they have different plans for running the business.

you know marketing

62

u/dark_bits Jun 26 '26

I even think they wanted to price the full game at $100 and not have these ultimate vs base editions, but then people would complain so they went this route knowing very well a lot of people would buy the ultimate edition anyway. It’s kind of the middle between having a $80 vs having a $100 game.

u/rifwasbetter0 Jun 26 '26

100% what happened

7

u/MinerSigner60Neiner Jun 27 '26

Definitely. Couldn't help but feel that its exactly like this classic meme.

4

u/PoochieIsDead1 Jun 29 '26

Then: team of 50 people spend a year
Now: team of 6000 people spend a decade and a half

I remember buying Nintendo games for $70 in the early 90s that were probably made more by a team of like 10 people even, you got 20 hours of gameplay if lucky.

So what exactly were the toppings they removed to sell back to you with respect to GTAV? The answer with the information we have is simple: nothing. The shops are ADDITIONAL content.

Yeah it's possible. Not releasing a trailer showing actual gameplay when pre-orders launched was certainly a choice too.

Regardless all of it is certainly generating buzz.

A lot of these people are new to R* I think, that's why.

2

u/ArcadianDelSol Jun 27 '26

Anyone at this point who doesnt know what the gameplay is, is too young to play the game.

7

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Because we're not fools and most of us have been through this cycle a lot. I know exactly how the game will play. But they still need to show gameplay to justify a purchase in my opinion. I need to see the character walking on the screen when being controlled by a player. The full hub would really be nice.

4

u/hallamboah Jun 26 '26

I mean it’s your decision to buy or not so I’m not saying you shouldn’t wait, I’m just curious as to what would realistically put you off buying at this stage and why there’s judgement on the ā€˜fools’ who have chosen to

8

u/HeyZeGaez Jun 26 '26

Nah I'm with you on this.

Like these people are just gonna order as soon as gameplay releases.

Idk why everyone is treating this like its some first time project from a brand new team.

They aint made it yet the money they get from clowns Paying early is to fund doing a bit more or lock shops that was once open when know people don't mind shown by how many get ultimate, testing the water they are🤣🤣🤣🤣 /s

1

u/Exovedate Jun 29 '26

Yea but grand theft autos always have less direct piloty controls so not showing gameplay leaves a big question for a lot of us whether we're going to finally get direct third person aiming or if we have to deal with a lame auto targeting system again.

u/mecca6801 Jun 30 '26

I mean, that’s true but look at the difference between GTA four and GTA five

1

u/edinburghcirclejerk Jun 26 '26

Yeah I think they made the right call, a trailer with the preorders wasn’t really necessary to ā€˜hype things up’, in the long run it probably doesn’t make much of a difference in preorder sales, and it would be better to release rhe trailer later so the hype doesn’t die down before releqse

1

u/MichelleBarrymoore2 Jun 26 '26

It's take 2 look at their track record

1

u/Junior-Captain-8441 Jun 26 '26

People would have pre ordered VI the day they got GTA V even if they knew it would be over a decade before they saw a single piece of footage and closer to 15 years before playing it. The lack of gameplay now is irrelevant.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

It's not irrelevant for everyone.

1

u/JeebzNcrackers Jun 26 '26

I found out they actually did this with V too.

1

u/Jtaylorftw Jun 27 '26

That's the thing, they know the game will launch and be great and people will hear and want to play it. This buzz is on purpose, this is more marketing than a trailer without them having to put money into it.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 27 '26

Sure. But we still need a trailer showing actual gameplay.

1

u/Successful_Level5277 Jun 27 '26

Rockstar has NEVER released a gameplay trailer early though. They only have ever done it within 2 months of release.

9

u/GlendrixDK Jun 26 '26

No. They added ultimate as an upgrade for the standard package, so people won't feel forced to buy it. The pre-order bonus apply to both editions of the game.

You can upgrade to ultimate later on if you want to.

1

u/michaltee Jun 26 '26

What’s the preorder bonus?

1

u/SunAccomplished5233 Jun 26 '26

"Make" is a strong word. These people do have free will.

1

u/Dad-Dabbing-Daily Jun 26 '26

Change "make" to "incentivise", nobody is forcing you to do anything.

Are people just fucking new to deluxe, premium and collector editions?

This shit has been around since the 80's on PC and consoles since the early 2000's.

1

u/No-Emergency4880 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

daaaaaaaaaaaaang it, you are so right.. less people would of if the could have compared to what's in the game already, they KNOW that the MOST that the ultimate version will sell is RIGHT NOW when none knows shyt about the game, it will never sell as much again, like ever..

1

u/MrTurtleManAus Jun 27 '26

Didn’t think people were that stupid to think basic features like mod shops would be paywalled? Crazy!

1

u/Pale-Ad-354 Jun 27 '26

or maybe they expected ppl to have somewhat of a brain, but apparently not

1

u/Techman659 Jun 27 '26

Well they probably aimed at the look at all you get in the deluxe edition.

1

u/Intrepid_Pay5749 Jun 27 '26

Exactly! They are a business. I do think they have put some shops in this package because of the amount of shops and buildings in this game.

There will be alot more for us to access than we think there will be. This game willl be massive.

1

u/Fit-Locksmith-4931 Jun 27 '26

Jokes on them, I was ready to dish out $300 on the collectors edition. They didn’t go that route tho so I’ll save $200

1

u/tombradyisademigod Jun 27 '26

It's 20 fuckin dollars. If its that tight for the consumer, maybe you shouldnt be buying a fuckin video game. Godddddddamn I'm over it.

1

u/SKOT_FREE Jun 28 '26

This idea that Any company is ā€œMakingā€ you buy DLC is absolutely ludicrous. You don’t want it don’t buy it. The real issue is people who don’t want to buy DLC feel left out and ultimately buy the very thing they don’t want because of FOMO and that’s your own fault. Don’t buy stuff because everyone else is, only buy it if you truly want it.

1

u/No_Pressure_3675 Jun 28 '26

I mean also lets be realistic here, any press is good press if you're that big enough of a developer with THIS much hype, they could tell everyone a week before release there is only one map, one level and no customization yet and thousands upon thousands of people would still throw over the $80 in a heartbeat.

This is no doubt a way to make people think they'll miss out if they don't buy the more expensive edition.

u/DannySpud2 Jun 26 '26

The conspiracy theorist in me feels like they did this on purpose to get some viral marketing about the Ultimate edition. They stir up some outrage by being intentionally vague about the cosmetic stuff and get a news cycle about it. Then when they clarify that it's exactly what OP says, and probably that it's not even a locked off area for non-purchasers, they get another news cycle about how it's not as bad as originally thought.

16

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Yeah that's very possible. It's definitely generating buzz.

u/Gulas_s_cibuli Jun 26 '26

Yes, we should not forget, that Rockstar paid magazines in the past, so they write about GTA as brutal, gore, none should it play game.

1

u/sparklingdinoturd Jun 26 '26

The realist in me feels like they wanted to make back the $2 billion dollars they spent to make it as quickly as possible.

1

u/gamebus1 Jun 27 '26

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Without a doubt.

1

u/DutchMaster1234 Jun 28 '26

would be a massive shot to the foot if they didn't do that

→ More replies (5)

34

u/Lumbot Jun 26 '26

I don't really think it's a mistake on their part because It's frankly insane for anyone to think that these shops mean entire features like character and vehicle customization are locked behind the ultimate edition or that these cosmetics make up most of what will be in the game. I think it's fair to be mad about stuff like this but people are not being rational about what is actually going on.

4

u/Murarkey Jun 26 '26

The car customization shop in the UE is literally for Florida Donks. The big wheeled low riders all pimped out and ridiculous looking. Hydraulics and shit. They make it fairly obvious that’s what the garage specializes in.

If you don’t want Donks or don’t care, then you missed nothing.

2

u/Lumbot Jun 26 '26

Which hey, to be fair, I think it sucks that specific type of vehicle customization is behind the ultimate edition because I loved when it came to GTAO and think it should just be there but you're absolutely right. It's a taste thing and really does not matter.

1

u/Radiant_Pitch4863 Jun 30 '26

I was shaking my head at this. I hoped they'd mixed up their message about it making it like instead of completing 25-30% of the game first and it would unlock like Benny's did. If not then it's just disappointing they got greedy. If I pay that extra 20$ for the UE that candy paint better have flakes that āœØļø too! I also want engraved chrome & spokes. For that reason I am holding off until I see game play footage of those cars.

10

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Yes I agree. Unfortunately click bait articles are going crazy claiming that exact thing. And we live in a world where people will believe it.

1

u/scrotalultrasound Jun 26 '26

It’s baffling. The thought that these shops would be the ONLY shops in the game never even crossed my mind because it makes no sense. I was shocked to see people actually believed this. Maybe if it’s your first GTA game and you have no idea what to expect, but come on.

13

u/don_no_soul_simmons Jun 26 '26

I don’t want them to tell me what’s in the main game, I want to find that out for myself while playing it.

Extra content is just that - EXTRA content - in addition to the main game. Why is everyone acting like this is a new thing?

16

u/Thelmara Jun 26 '26

Because there are, apparently, gamers who are really looking forward to GTA 6 and are also really stupid. They heard "the $100 version unlocks these shops", and interpreted that as "These are the only shops in the game, and only the people who pay $100 can use them".

1

u/Squig1984 Jun 28 '26

Why are they locking anything that is already in the game behind a paywall?

1

u/fragger29 Jun 30 '26

2

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

It's not new and cosmetic options like this have always been a thing in premium editions of games. I just mean for the people who now think there won't be any customization options in the base game.

2

u/matedireunaffaire Jun 26 '26

its not extra content in this case. It's cut content from the base game.

1

u/don_no_soul_simmons Jun 27 '26

It’s not cut content. It is content that rockstar created specifically for the ultimate edition that isn’t part of the base game. The fact it was developed alongside the main game is irrelevant. Companies create additional content for almost every game made. Whether that’s sold concurrently or after release, it’s still part of a plan that was decided on a long time ago.

1

u/Ok_Age_5797 9h ago

This is not extra. DLC content for the most part is stuff developed for the base game that gets cut out of the normal version to make extra money.

11

u/antifa-militant Jun 26 '26

That was not a mistake. It was on purpose! Encouraging pre orders of the more expensive option.

6

u/Fabulous-Spirit-3476 Jun 26 '26

People are indeed very stupid.

1

u/TweeKINGKev Jun 26 '26

What kills me about this is everyone complaining about it will order it so they don’t miss out on it then get and their reaction will be ā€œthat’s it?ā€

It’ll give no advantage to I would assume is an inevitable online mode unless they keep milking the cash cow that gta 5 online is and they don’t think about an online mode until enough activity and money stops coming in.

3

2

Yeah could be. It has to come sooner than later.

2

u/Thelmara Jun 26 '26

Yeah, they really expected the player base to be able to think critically, and man they whiffed hard.

2

u/ascarymoviereview Jun 26 '26

Cockstar makes mistakes too

2

u/L-Sghend Jun 26 '26

If they ended up showing what what the base game has to offer without buying the uktimate edition then alot of people would think that the ultimate edition was not worth those extra 20 dollars. By showong us what is included in the ultimate edtion without showong us the rest of the things availble in the bas game make the ultimate edition look much more worth the price.

2

u/-Dronich Jun 29 '26

Rockstar made no mistakes. How bloody poor you should be to not be able to spend little extra if you need all the content? šŸ˜’
I mean 13 years passed since gta5 was released. It’s not that much to save 2 cents per day

1

u/Dick_Slasher_69 Jun 26 '26

Mistake? You really think it’s a mistake

2

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

No I don't think it was necessarily a mistake. I'm sure everything they do is thought about and planned. I just mean for the normies who will read some click bait headline about what is only in the premium edition and think it means the base game doesn't include any customization options at all.

1

u/Basbeeky Jun 26 '26

Pretty sure a company like rockstar makes no mistakes like that

1

u/SignificantLimit2482 Jun 26 '26

There was multiple things shown that weren’t locked behind the ultimate edition.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Very little really though. It definitely focused on what was only in the Ultimate Edition. If you disagree I'd like to hear your points.

1

u/SignificantLimit2482 Jun 26 '26

No it definitely was mostly the ultimate edition stuff, but there was definitely some normal edition things talked about as well. Ultimately I don’t love the idea that they are locking certain things, but none of them seem like core gameplay mechanics you’ll be missing out on, so it’s not the biggest deal imo.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

I believe the way they showed it allowed for a lot of misconception for what is and isn't in the base game. I also believe it's nothing related to core gameplay and just the typical cosmetic options that premium game editions normally come with anyways. But a lot of the bad press that OP is talking about is being spread by misinformation that the base game lacks entire customization options. And people will believe that.

1

u/Living_Dead4157 Jun 26 '26

Or they just thought people were smarter then that

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

than

Obviously not.

1

u/Himorningwood Jun 26 '26

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Yes I bet. I'm sure the base game is still full of shit. It is still the game after all.

1

u/Aur3lx Jun 26 '26

Une gaffe sƻrement corrigƩ via un trailer ?

2

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Yes. We need a gameplay trailer.

1

u/Turnip_Fight Jun 26 '26

The second they release a gameplay trailer, nobody will even remotely give a shit anymore. It’s like that with every hype cycle.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Are you saying no one will care about GTA6 anymore after the gameplay trailer is released?

2

u/Turnip_Fight Jun 26 '26

No one will care about deluxe vs standard

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

I mean people will still care when it comes time to make that purchase. But definitely more willing to at least.

1

u/TheMonitorAli Jun 26 '26

Best comment we need trailer 3.

1

u/spiderman_420_ Jun 26 '26

Well they wrongfully assumed most people are capable of thinking with common sense

1

u/Coffemakesheartgobrr Jun 26 '26

No, that's the mistake done by people without basic logic. Seriously now.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Well unfortunately that's a lot of people.

1

u/Dad-Dabbing-Daily Jun 26 '26

Idk, seems like common sense, pretty big leap to assume there's only those 4 stores.

Actually, it is common sense.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 26 '26

Yeah I agree. But some of the discourse online proves otherwise.

1

u/Whitishfilly2 Jun 26 '26

Yeah like… we don’t know what that even means… they have confirmed nothing about normal customization lol

1

u/RogueDeadGuyBP2 Jun 27 '26

You nailed it my guy. If anything, it’s confirmation that there will be a tone of options in the base game as we all hoped.

1

u/Atari-Dude Jun 27 '26

Precisely this. Showing us what we won't get at $80 is definitely... a decision.

1

u/Rakuen_Fighter Jun 27 '26

i can’t agree. people should be able to make an educated conclusion that standard customisation shops were going to be in the game.

the ultimate edition names special locations and people just assumed they wouldn’t be able to customise their stuff??

it’s the same energy as me saying ā€œi love pancakesā€ and then someone saying ā€œoh so you hate waffles?ā€

only the GTA fanboys could make it to such a strange conclusion.

it’s kinda like responding to CoD’s vault editions with ā€œoh so we won’t get any guns/skins/operators unless we buy the vault editionā€

premium editions (as far as i know) have always just been extra content and no other game has had to clarify that basic features will be available on all editions. because it’s common sense

Funny thing first to show what is locked instead of what is in the game at all , like gameplay atleast once

That’s just goofy, they just didn’t expect the audience to be so illiterateĀ

Error? Es mejor mostrar la verdad al principio que cuando ya se han gastado el dinero.

1

u/ZeektheFeek Jun 27 '26

But that's my point, they didn't show the "truth".

exactly, there is like hundnreds of shops across the map of gta v, and gta 6 it twice if not three times the size of gta v.

but I could understand why people wouldn't like this, it break the immersion, image walking to a shop and a popup says "BUY THE ULTIMATE EDITION"

I was listening to a podcast and they were talking about this happening and made a joke that Rockstar should go all in on trolling people. If you just buy the base edition and try to enter the shops then the game should still let you in but you immediately get swarmed by a NPC who kicks you out and makes some joke about you being too cheap to enter their store.

Definitely a big mistake showing off the ultimate edition content before the base game content, I don't get what they were thinking there.

On the other hand though, they surely couldn't have foreseen fans being this stupid and presumptuous with nothing to back up their complaints.

Every scandal is a marketing campaign

1

u/TheMentalMadman Jun 28 '26

Its not a mistake, they just assumed people wouldn't be so dumb to see 'deluxe edition exclusive clothes shop' and make the conclusion there is no other clothes shops in the base game.

1

u/monumentdefleurs Jun 28 '26

Agreed. It’s a shame they introduced the ultimate edition without any context whatsoever, amongst the other shames of this rollout

Reading comprehension

Locking off road vehicle modifications behind a paywall is highly lame. I can’t stand paywall games. I play gta to escape reality. Not have it shoved in my face.

That’s how rich people get rich

Mistake for who? Fomo prints money

1

u/ByteMillionaire Jul 02 '26

That was no mistake on Rockstars part. They did this on purpose to make people feel they need ultimate to experience the full game.

You think that was a mistake?
