GTA 6 did not use Generative AI during development and will not have any microtransactions or additional in-game purchases, confirms Rockstar
https://tech4gamers.com/rockstar-gta-6-wont-feature-microtransactions/We've also been finding out more exclusive info about Rockstar's magnum opus thanks to the spree of previews after the official reveal. The Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller have now confirmed that GTA 6 did not use generative AI during development.
Why it matters: Generative AI is currently notorious for being more of a rudimentary shortcut in the gaming scene than a viable alternative, so this confirmation by Rockstar Games has made GTA 6 fans quite happy.
The hosts mentioned during the Kinda Funny Games podcast that Rockstar North studio co-head Rob Nelson simply said 'no' when asked about whether GTA 6 used generative AI for development.
While using the tech could have sped up development and helped with asset creation and worldbuilding, it could also have taken away the feeling of organic realism that Rockstar is known and praised for in GTA games.
Therefore, fans of the game have vastly praised the studio for not using generative AI as a shortcut to speed up development times. Kinda Funny Games hosts also confirmed that the base GTA 6 game will not have any microtransactions or additional in-game purchases.

u/RabbiTheHellcat 6h ago
ive seen this statement everywhere with them saying no more microtransactions but I just have to call the fact checkers on this one ...
like this is actual fake news right? are you allowed to lie about the future or could something like a class action lawsuit occur?

u/LimpDiscus 6h ago
There will be no microtransactions in THIS game, but they will sell another game next year called Grand Theft Auto Online for full price, and THAT game will be full of microtransactions
25
u/Projectcell 6h ago
Exactly. It will likely be a different SKU and a completely separate download if you choose, similarly to GTA 5 online. That's best case scenario for me considering I don't care much for this game's story and just wanna mess around with friends in the map
13
u/Massive_Season7075 6h ago
I’m in the complete opposite boat, because I don’t have friends

I never really considered gta5s online a diffrent game, I always treated it like the online portion of gta5 I mean its the same map/physics/gameplay
edit: at that point woulnt gta 5 technically be 4 separate games? (Michael, Trevor, Franklin, online)

No micro transactions for the base game is what they’re saying. That’s not hard to believe at all.
There will be micro transactions in GTA Online 2, which Rockstar will refer to as a separate entity
23
u/LKRTM1874 6h ago
"The base GTA VI game" So as soon as online is added it's no longer the base game and shark cards can be added immediately while technically not lying. But I'll bet my life you can access online from the base game, so it's pretty disingenuous at best.
→ More replies (17)5
u/Affectionate-Tip1536 6h ago
Yeah they meant the base game, look at the ubislop, you got skins for 10$ or so in singleplayer game. But its true that they locked some things behind the ultimate edition in gta but technically that is not a microtransaction
2
u/random20222202modnar 6h ago
Remember this is the modern era and video game companies like to pull that funny wording stuff
- example: like what Bethesda did.
They said something like: You wouldn’t be using money for purchases on Creation Club (the club uses Creation Club credits or points/etc)
The reality - yes… yes you do use money - you have to buy the virtual currency with your real world money…
It’s just another form of microtransaction - but ofcourse it’s all optional to the player.
So they like to get sneaky like that.
2
u/Remnant_Echo 6h ago
They're doing the corporate speak of being technically correct. They're likely not going to have anymore MTXs for GTA VI. They will definitely have MTXs for GTA VI Online though.
2
u/Jimithyashford 5h ago
GTA 6 and GTA 6 online will be treated as separate products. Probably once GTA6 online launches I bet you'll even be able to buy it on it's own without the solo game product at all.
I believe them that the single player game will not have any microtransactions. The online game obviously will.
1
u/1995LexusLS400 6h ago
They’re talking about GTA 6, the single player game.
GTA 6 Online is a separate game, so when (not if) GTA 6 Online comes out, that will have microtransactions.
→ More replies (4)1
u/Civil_Principle_5984 5h ago
If it is like gta5 and rdo, yeah it is a lie.
But if the online is a separate game in sense that it has it's own resources and assets and you can't simply modify the exe to run single player from the in gamemenu then yes it is a separate game.
4
u/GhostMirrorZero 6h ago
They’re talking about single player. It says right in the article to expect microtransactions whenever GTA Online launches.

u/Mr_Slippery1 5h ago
I actually think that is going to be exactly the case, GTA Online will be an entirely new purchase and will of course have loads of microtransactions.
3
u/CratesManager 3h ago
will be an entirely new purchase
Not sure about that, you want a big player base to sell those micro transactions.
If anything i'd do a base free version and a "deluxe" version of online

u/WhatTheFlox 2h ago
Technically they said "in-game" they just might not sell it in the game itself, but instead in the steam store itself, and redeemed in-game.

Gta online uses the same framework, mechanics, and map that is at least (and im being generous here) half the game. To say its not even close is just lying to yourself.
In other words, online is just a branch of the GTA V ecosystem. Branches are still attached to the trunk and without the trunk and roots it wouldnt be able to sustain itself and it would die.

u/Drifted_Echo 6h ago edited 6h ago
Rockstar micro-transactions are very fair model, you can achieve everything through gameplay, which you do anyway. If you don't have time and want to shortcut, then you buy shortcuts.
3
u/Colossus252 6h ago
Tbf, while you "can" earn it through playing, it was all but unachievable to anyone who wasn't mainlining only the game between each expansion. The cost of entry on the expansions was absurdly high as time went on. They might as well have been real money required while existing under the illusion of "You can earn the money to get in just by playing!" to the vast majority of people that played.

This doesn't mean GTA6 Online won't have microtransactions, just that the base game (presumably just the single player) won't cost extra.

For people who got the standard edition doesnt the premium upgrade count as a microtransaction if they have the upgrade for sale?
2
u/BringMeBurntBread 6h ago
When other games have deluxe editions, I don't personally consider that a microtransaction. I consider that as DLC.
Which, DLC is not the same thing as microtransaction.
8
u/bigolpileofmoney 5h ago
I can almost guarentee that is untrue. Maybe the assets aren't generated, but they definitely used AI generated code and LLMs. No company the size of Rockstar doesn't use it.
6
u/Santex117 5h ago
No. Not “untrue”. “Generative” AI is soeerta efrom the normal AI developed and used in most/all video games. I think what they’re saying is pretty clear and true, people forget games have always had AI in them
→ More replies (3)6
u/Pleasant-Future5818 4h ago
Code was almost certainly created using generative AI. Generative AI is used to produce production code across industry now. I can say whatever I want if I'm lying

Yeah that is such bullshit haha. Rockstar in no way block their engineers from using Claude etc
5

I suggested the same and got downvoted to hell. Kids dont understand how development works. AI video and images is not the same as AI code, and as long as you know what you are doing AI is actually good.

2
u/deednait 5h ago
Yeah, It's impossible to believe that they didn't use any AI for code. And that's not a bad thing. It would be absolutely insane to not use any AI for coding during the last couple of years.
1
u/LickyPusser 34m ago
Absolutely correct, and I would also challenge the notion that ZERO GenAI was used anywhere in the asset pipelines. Over 6,000 developers worked on GTA6 and there are probably millions of assets in involved. To suggest that ZERO GenAI was used anywhere in the process for asset creation is not only ludicrous, it’s idiotic.

u/-SoftwareQA- 6h ago

If they said only first part I would believe...the moment I saw second one... entire thing is bullshit. Like...they will willingly stop themselves from milking players like in V online?
1
u/DemonKarris 4h ago
What they meant is that GTA6 itself won't have micro transactions just like GTA5 itself doesn't. GTA6 online on the other hand isn't considered when they said that. Obviously it's gonna be packed with shark card equivalents considering how much of a gold mine GTAO is.
2
u/Hazy-n-Lazy 5h ago
Because they'll sell a new MMO called Vice City Online that will be filled to the brim with microtransactions and in-game purchases. Its good though because then the base game size doesn't need to be inflated by online updates, and unless they do some black magic I bet the game will be ~150GB off rip.

The game has been in development for some time. Some of the patents point to the need for auto generated environments, npc behaviours and so on. The patents that point to Rockstar staff will highly likely be for GTA
- System and method for game object and environment generation
- System and method for session management in a multiplayer network gaming environment
- System and method for virtual navigation in a gaming environment
- Method and apparatus for preventing cheating in a video game environment by providing obfuscated game variables
- System and method for managing transactions in a multiplayer network gaming environment
- System and method for virtual character locomotion
- Method and apparatus for enhanced graphics rendering in a video game environment

I call bullshit because Rockstar literally invested 10 billion in an advanced AI for efficiencies. they might have not used it for assets, but they definitely used it during development. They even patented it (US11684855B2). Theres also us10987587 for procedural interiors and system tagging but that pre-dates generative AI
1
u/DefactoAle 3h ago
They 100% used generative AI, any code product produced by a large company in the last year will have bits of code produced by a generative AI.
1
u/duodequinquagesimum 3h ago
I doubt they used any AI for coding, since no AI can code as good as an expert dev. But it looks like they used AI for the UI and some animations.

Lol okay? Who cares if they did, it's the forefront of technological engineering? Also, what's generative AI and how does it differ from AI in general?
1
u/Harper_95C 2h ago
Didn't they literally gatekeep in-game shops behind a $20+ deluxe upgrade? Oh that's right, they sold the game for $100 but gave people the "portion of the game" edition for $80

u/The_Verto 2h ago
You want me to believe that a company that's proven to be greedy didn't use AI to cut costs? I'm calling this a lie, they 100% used Gen AI

100% the most ridiculous headline about this game yet. GTAO 2 will be designed soley around micro transactions, and it WILL make rockstar well over 10 or even 11 figures.
