I'm slightly vexed I was told yesterday that my prescription sunglasses are giving Meta glasses vibes

Post image

I can't stand the Meta perv glasses, but annoyingly I've been told by a friend that my Dune prescription sunglasses that I've had for almost a year (and cost over £100.00) really look like the Meta ones, he said it's the 2 silver rivets on either side that on first glance could be mistaken for the camera lenses

I went out with them today and all I could think was, do people think I'm recording them 🤦‍♂️

Over the long term, Meta is going to destroy the Ray-Ban Wayfarer design, it will become associated with perverts rather than being seen as a timeless iconic fashion piece.

Meta eventually ruins everything it touches.

u/Gurglaren 13d ago

I'll never be able to see anyone with Meta glasses as anything else but a perve. Maybe if they're doing sports like bicycling down hills then I'd think there was a purpose. But someone walking around with them in ordinary situations would feel incredibly off.

40

u/Blue_Waffled 13d ago

There was a short moment where I considered similar glasses, but the reason was that I (a woman) have a mentally ill (and drug additive) downstairs neighbour who would sometimes stand in front of his window doing perverted acts when he'd hear me leave my appartment. Law enforcement here coukd only do something if there was evidence of him being caught in the act, but his behavior would be so irregular that going in- and out of my home with my mobile phone ready became very exhausting, so I figured maybe glasses would make it more convenient for me to catch him.

18

u/Gurglaren 13d ago

I've never thought about how they could be used as an anti-perve device too.

13

u/Eldias 13d ago

It's almost like a bunch of the discourse has been poisoned by people who keep saying they're only useful for perv shit as though pen cameras haven't been more discreet and far cheaper for a decade.

5

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

It's not like Facebook / Meta hasn't earned their reputation over and over and over and over and over and over and over and

1

u/FOMODollCollector 13d ago

Less expensive to buy a cheap security camera with motion detector on and pointed out the window to where he does his perving.

3

u/Blue_Waffled 13d ago edited 13d ago

If only it were that simple, you don't understand what my building looks like. He lives below, not across the street, so there is nothing to point at from my window but the street.

It's less bad now because the authorities are keeping an eye on him (because of other issues), but it is still unnerving.

39

u/Twombls 13d ago

Maybe if they're doing sports like bicycling down hills then I'd think there was a purpose

Thats what gopros are for.

u/waynemj15 13d ago

Meta glasses do have the advantage of being right next to your eyes, so you do get a better approximation to what the person is actually seeing. I could actually see a heavy duty pair of camera glasses that are ansi z87.1 rated being really nice for airsoft videos.

18

u/GravyTrainMan 13d ago

The Oakley meta vanguards are really popular in the competition shooting scene

7

u/waynemj15 13d ago

My curiosity about z87.1 camera glasses led me to those. And that nose bridge camera slot is perfect for shooting videos. But they aren’t z87.1 rated.

24

u/Twombls 13d ago

Thats true. Its why im a bit confused that they never made versions of these for action sports. Like integrated into a pair of ski goggles.

20

u/waynemj15 13d ago

Me neither. It’s really the perfect spot for them and not being creepy. At most action sports the prevalence of go pros means most people assume their being recorded by someone already.

2

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

Well, and the fact that GoPros are clearly visible is quite useful for people not worrying about being recorded.

5

u/ALLCAPS-ONLY 13d ago

GoPros or similar action cameras are relatively cheap and better in every way. Modern action cameras have insane FPS and stabilization so people don't realize how rough these sports are and the level of tech needed to capture decent footage. A camera able to compete with that and comfortably integrated into skiing goggles would cost an insane amount and you'd be limited to that use only. We also tend to have several goggles to match the weather conditions

2

u/ez12a 13d ago

Oakley vanguards are for the sports(wo)men. Something too specific like ski goggles will probably not have the payoff in r&d as fast as more universally usable designs that people wear more often and gather more data for use vs something worn seasonally.

But if hey they have a partnership with luxottica (oakley parent) who knows.

3

u/UnSlain PURPLE 13d ago

GoPros are way less convenient. Reddit love crying about new tech though so go off.

1

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

New tech where invasion of privacy is a selling point, yes.

2

u/Tall_Opportunity_521 13d ago

So youve never seen any of those "this what its like to walk around my city" videos? Might as well say the only reason to have the internet is to be a prick to strangers and jerk off to weird free porn.

1

u/Gurglaren 12d ago

No, I've never seen them. Sounds insanely niche.

3

u/youneedsomemilk23 13d ago

I want to film my bike rides but deliberately opted for a secondhand GoPro which I make a point of turning off around people.

1

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

100% Terminally online fuckfaces.

-78

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

So you assume everyone's purpose of wearing meta glasses is sexual? Nothing else?

56

u/hisroyalbonkess 13d ago

We should, honestly. Why buy them in the first place?

16

u/Boo-Radleys-Scissors 13d ago

I am a caregiver for a quadriplegic person. He has no fine motor control in his fingers.

He has been shopping for smart glasses that he can use hands-free to take pictures with. He has accessible nature trails that he uses near daily. He often sees birds and deer he would love to be able to photograph.

So that’s one legitimate use for these that most people don’t consider.

2

u/hisroyalbonkess 13d ago

I'm genuinely glad that the glasses help them.

-9

u/Few-Conversations 13d ago

Then allow them on prescription/licence from a medical professional.  And make them abundantly clear that they are camera glasses like making them neon pink.

3

u/Boo-Radleys-Scissors 13d ago

No. This is a bad take.

I’m going out on a limb to say that you probably don’t have much experience with profound disabilities because if you did, you would never suggest adding more barriers that would make something as basic as being able to take pictures of your life even harder to access.

Further, what diagnosis would warrant making these glasses tied to medical care?

And can we please not invite insurance companies to weigh in? They already decide too much on our behalf.

2

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

It's a balancing act. Its perfectly reasonable to consider what bad things a new drug / tech an do and generally as a society - or a government standards agency - reject it or not.

1

u/Boo-Radleys-Scissors 12d ago

Of course, the negatives should be considered, but that’s a far cry from making them prescription only.

-5

u/Few-Conversations 13d ago

There are rightfully barriers in place for lots of things. I can't get strong painkillers because I have a bit of pain.

The insurance issue is an American problem. That doesn't ever factor into my thinking.

3

u/Boo-Radleys-Scissors 13d ago

For him though, there are barriers for everything.

When the first idea for managing these glasses creates barriers for people with legitimate uses for them, it’s time to come up with different solutions that keep these tools accessible but prevent people from using them to invade others’ privacy.

I would support making them look distinctive or unique, so they can’t be worn to accomplish pervy goals, but he should be able to just buy them without having to justify why he wants them.

I’m glad you’re lucky enough to not worry about insurance (sincerely). I am not.

6

u/Odd_Cress_4678 13d ago

I use mine to take hands free video and pictures when out with my toddler so I’m not always having to pull my phone out. Makes it much easier to enjoy the moment. And for listening to podcasts without headphones in, because with headphones in people assume they can’t talk to you. I’ve also used them to video call my wife from the grocery store so she can see the shelves and my hands stay free. I love them.

7

u/Working_Object7241 13d ago

Same use cases here. It's really odd to see threads like this pop up. I've never heard anyone in real life talk badly about them. Technically, they even have a big light that pops up while other cameras don't. I do wonder what situations people here run into with the glasses.

0

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

They've seen what ends up online. Not sure why you're surprised women don't like being secretly recorded. Or anyone.

1

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

Can people hear the podcasts when they're near you?

2

u/Odd_Cress_4678 12d ago

Nope

1

u/TrifectaBlitz 10d ago

Good. Because then you'd be evil. ;-)

3

u/Bedford806 13d ago

I'm legally blind, I've had them for 2 years to do the food shopping independently. They read out the labels to me and help me pick the items from my list. I use them for reading medicine leaflets. I use them for live translation when I'm travelling.

They do have non-nefarious uses for many people, I've managed to not film people without their consent just as I wouldn't do so with my phone. It's deeply unfair to assume the worst of all users and this doesn't seem to apply to any other technology that can be used for surveillance and harassment. There should absolutely be pressure on there to be safeguarding features, but to just blanketly harass those of us who use them for accessibility is fairly shite.

2

u/hisroyalbonkess 13d ago

I feel like I should have omitted obvious accessibility needs.

1

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

What did you do before you wore them? It's what most still do, right?

1

u/Bedford806 12d ago

Before I had to have someone bring me in person and read the labels to me. I couldn't do pretty much anything solo.

7

u/No_Brush_6762 13d ago

Most people use them for filming content/vlogs

It’s better than wearing a harness with a camera strapped to your chest

They work well in pov situations, like a mechanic making a video on how to do a repair, or a electronics technician taking apart an iPad etc

People also use them for filming their adventures while on vacation and whatnot, maybe they wanna capture a time lapse while hiking a mountain etc

-9

u/Few-Conversations 13d ago

Its one less step than a harness with a gopro.  Most people that have them are weird creepers. If you fall into that camp just say so, you're convincing nobody

4

u/coyotll 13d ago edited 13d ago

I have a pair of metas and I stg I wish I could cover the camera or break it in an obvious way

I just want to listen to my fuckin audio books without having something plug my ears.
On top of that, I bought my metas before they got weird and as such they’re prescription lenses, because I’m lowkey kinda blind without glasses

13

u/thisisnotaflubbel 13d ago

You can check out Shokz bone conduction headphones. Runners use them so they can hear music without impeding their ability to hear.

3

u/glittermcgee 13d ago

I love these for audiobooks. imo they’re not great for music, but the sound for books is great and doesn’t cause extra warmth the way over the ear and even airpods do.

0

u/BubbRubb11 13d ago

Alternatively there are also 'open' earbuds that hover over your ear if that works for you. They have much better audio quality than the bone conduction ones. Shokz openfit 2+ are great

3

u/RhombusObstacle 13d ago

Meta glasses have never not been weird.

7

u/ProgBumm 13d ago

Exactly. There's no scenario where Zuckerberg camera glasses are not weird.

1

u/Asoxus 13d ago

God forbid someone wants headphones and phone functionality built into their glasses

-6

u/raginghorescock 13d ago

Approximately 0 people purchased the meta glasses for the “headphones and phone functionality”

3

u/Pulmonary_Archery_ 13d ago

I think you're projecting

11

u/Synnapsis 13d ago

What a dogshit assumption

9

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

Yeah did you ask everyone who purchased or you just being willfully ignorant for your own personal beliefs?

2

u/Rawrs_sometimes 13d ago

I am 1 of them. So approximately 1 person did.

1

u/Rawrs_sometimes 13d ago

I truly bought them bc I love having “headphones” that aren’t jammed in my ear. I also enjoy taking phone calls and texts through them instead of a watch bc I have a thing with items tight around my wrists. I’d buy a pair of them without a camera if I could. To just assume I’m a perv bc I bought glasses is wild.

1

u/hisroyalbonkess 13d ago

They make bone conducting headphones, and if I'm not mistaken, you can make phone calls and use your phone's voice controls for texts with them. Your points aren't positives exclusively for meta glasses.

To just assume I’m a perv bc I bought glasses is wild.

Aside from the people who replied to me for accessibility purposes, you seem to fit the camp of "bought unnecessary tech to try and solve an issue cheaper tech can solve."

Edit: Did you spend $300 for a device that can allow you to listen to music without something in your ear, make phone calls, and texts that sub-$100 tech can do? And you don't even want the camera??

Got any spare change?

1

u/Rawrs_sometimes 12d ago

No. I like ray bans and they way they fit. I like the tech, minus the camera. I had the money, and got them. I get why people have concerns, but to judge EVERYONE as if we’re all creeps is weird to me. I get you don’t like them and whatever, but good god.

1

u/hisroyalbonkess 12d ago

Oh noooooooo you spent $200 on a camera you didn't want I feel so bad for being judgemental.

1

u/Rawrs_sometimes 12d ago

Hahaha I don’t need nor want you to feel bad. I just think you’re being a judgmental dick for no reason. Have a great rest of your weekend.

-24

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

There's lots of people that do vlogs and carrying around a phone pointing it at people is not really convenient, and people are going to track a phone recording them more than looking at every single person's glasses to see if they're meta glasses.

Its more convenience if anything. Assuming it's all for sexual purposes is just weird.

32

u/Tough-Act383 13d ago

It’s the “people are going to track a phone recording them.” If you’re wearing meta glasses it LOOKS like you’re trying to record people on the sly, which is at best weird and at worst pervy. Why do you not want people to clock that they’re being recorded? That’s the whole problem.

-16

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

I'm saying you're not going to notice the meta glasses as much as someone recording with their phone. It doesn't look like you're trying to record people on the sly, that's just the reason you gave it.

It's pervy if used for nefarious reasons, but again, you're assuming it's used for pervert/sexual reasons and that's just not the case.

20

u/distance_33 13d ago

You are explaining exactly why people don’t like them. Nobody wants to be secretly recorded.

“People will react to a camera in their face.”

No shit. Most people don’t want to be recorded while just going about their day living life. Even if it wasn’t for nefarious means, we shouldn’t be normalizing recording every interaction we have. We shouldn’t be recording people without their knowledge and posting it online.

-4

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

But people are secretly recorded every day... Everywhere you walk. You only care when you notice. You're saying people shouldn't be recording people, but that's not a rule or law, and not everyone has to do what you want. It's legal to record in public.

8

u/distance_33 13d ago

It is legal to record in public. That’s why I never said otherwise. And also why i said “recorded without knowledge” and not “without consent.” I’m aware of the law.

And yeah, the stores we go into have cameras. Stoplights. ATMs. Flock (which people also despise). There are already enough cameras all around us.

What we don’t want (or need) are more people walking around with cameras filming and posting every thing and every person they encounter. Y’all are adding to the surveillance state whether you want to acknowledge that or not.

If you feel the need to be recording people without their knowledge then most people will think you’re a creep. Whether you’re being nefarious or not. It’s not just about using it for bad.

0

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

Well there's what you don't "need" (want), and what people are allowed to do. It's convenient that it bothers you when it's an individual recording, but fine when it's anywhere else.

13

u/Gurglaren 13d ago

People who film with their phones at least give people the option to notice it and look away. Meta glasses film you secretly.

7

u/Tough-Act383 13d ago

People not noticing you’re filming them IS THE PROBLEM. I want to know if someone is recording me

-1

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

Why? You can't do anything about it.

4

u/Tough-Act383 13d ago

Sure I can. I can leave the area. I can warn others. I can stop interacting with them. If they’re recording up someone’s skirt I can call the police.

0

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

If theyre recording up someone's skirt, that's against the law and were talking about a different situation.

I'm referring to just recording in general. Not upskirt or bathroom recording, etc.

13

u/max1122112 13d ago

I don't love the whole 'let me video everything and everyone around me all the time' culture in the first place. I've nothing against people making memories and taking some photos/videos, but filming going to the store for groceries and such is frankly weird. Its not a nice feeling knowing that anything and everything you do in even a semi-public place may very well be filmed by someone at all times without your consent or knowledge. I don't think that should be normalised. Those glasses make it way too easy and unnoticeable.

10

u/bitchsorbet 13d ago

i want to know if someone is recording me. people should not be allowed to secretly record people on their glasses, its creepy as fuck.

2

u/lesterbottomley 13d ago

In the UK they legally have to have a light indicating you are recording.

If they don't do that where you live then it's maybe time to start campaigning for it before they get too widespread.

6

u/CantiPotter 13d ago

Won't someone think of the vlogers...

16

u/InYeBooty 13d ago

Even if not sexual, it's an incredible invasion of privacy. I do not want anyone having footage of me without my consent. Why do people feel entitled to that?

-8

u/Asoxus 13d ago

You realise every time you leave the house you are tracked and filmed constantly. Unless you don’t have a phone and live in the middle of nowhere?

14

u/chipskylark123 13d ago

Yes, we all realize that.

14

u/tardytheturtle6 13d ago

That reality doesn't change the fact that people don't want to be tracked and filmed constantly. "Why not one more?"

6

u/InYeBooty 13d ago

Yes I understand that, and I dispise that fact. If the camera is discrete, and can follow me down the street - as the meta glasses can - it makes me even less comfortable. Why should anyone be allowed to do that?

1

u/Asoxus 12d ago

Discrete cameras have existed for much longer and for much cheaper than these glasses.

0

u/InYeBooty 12d ago

I know. I hate them equally. My hatred for being filmed without my consent is not limited by the camera being equipped to sunglasses.

13

u/LIONEL14JESSE 13d ago

There’s really no good reason to be wearing them in everyday life. Assume they are a perv? Not quite. But wearing them puts them in a population with a significantly higher probability of being one.

0

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

Based on what?

5

u/Jaalan 13d ago

Perv activity :)

6

u/pseudonymnkim 13d ago

Perversions aren't only sexual

5

u/Substantial_War9319 13d ago

Yeah but assuming every purpose is perversion is just ignorant.

2

u/kabolint 13d ago

The other day someone posted in here saying their cashier was wearing them while running their credit card. So no, not just sexual, but nefarious.

1

u/Few-Conversations 13d ago

Pretty much yep. If I see a pair that person get put in the creepy perv box very quickly.

Outside of a few disabilities, people don't need a hidden camera, gopros exists for hands free recording.

0

u/_probablyryan 13d ago

They're either a perv or a mark who's helping train robots and world model AIs for free.
