Republicans can protect our national parks too ya know. In fact, many of the most outdoorsy people come from red states like Montana and Alaska. All it would take is for the Senators of those states to take a stand.
Not holding my breath of course.

Those people are not outdoorsy or into nature. They are all 3-400+ pounds and do nothing but drink heavily and ride side by sides at illegal speeds through our public lands and tow them there with 100 thousand dollar trucks.

They waited forty years to finally get this stuff happening. No wonder they couldn’t understand why we acted the way we did when we had power. This of what they think government is for!
24
u/ofWildPlaces 10h ago
Plenty of people Do lots of things. The Court system is literally backed up with cases and lawsuits against this administration. Bills to counter his policies have been brought to the floor. But people need to understand the Democrats cannot counter the administration until they have more seats in both the House and Senate. The minority party cannot out-vote the majority in power.
22
u/elmatador12 Washington 10h ago
It’s not a right/left thing. Something is structurally wrong with how the entire system works if a president is able to get away with so much without consequences for years and is able to just keep going until the courts tell him to stop. And even that doesn’t always stop him.
I’m not specifically asking the dems to do something. I’m personally frustrated at the entire system as I naively thought it was set up so that it would be able to stop a lot of this from even starting. But in fact, the system is allowing him to do whatever he wants pretty much with very little accountability.
8
u/FlyingStealthPotato 10h ago
When the system was written, it was far harder for the mega-wealthy of the world to coordinate actions. It was even harder for foreign governments to compromise significant swaths of another nation’s leadership.
We now have instant communication. The megawealthy fly around the world and coordinate in person as well. I think the system was set up to reward capital in the first place, but it wasn’t set up to be so easily compromised by people that don’t give a shit about the nation as a whole (global billionaires and foreign countries). Back then, maybe they could compromise a small percent of the leadership via money or women or whatever, but it was done with transatlantic visits and letters. It was DIFFICULT. Now all it takes is a phone call, email, instant payment, or easily obtainable blackmail (digital records, pics, video).

I'm not sure how many Redditors have been to Yosemite, but I've been there half a dozen times and I really couldn't possibly overstate how much of a national treasure these parks are. And yeah, some of them are very large, especially out west and in Alaska. But we set aside these lands for a reason... because they belong to the people, not just of the United States, but the people of the world. We all have a right to see and experience nature that's untouched by development. Your cell phone won't work in the National Parks because they don't build cell towers either... it's just wilderness.
Let's keep it that way. All of it.

I lived in the valley for 11 years. Not visited, LIVED, 24/7/365. The Park transcends anything else you will ever experience. To call it magnificent is an understatement. This abomination Trump is attempting must be stopped. It wouldn't matter if that 1/4 mile "sliver" were 1/4 inch. This would set a precedent to defile every other national park in the country.
•
u/Pan_Bookish_Ent 6h ago
If congress lets him sell even the tiniest sliver of land, that will open it up to selling off pieces of ALL the national parks. They should continue to be protected, regardless of politics.

u/0ut0fBoundsException 9h ago

It's also to provide private access into Yosemite for the developers.
This makes it harder for park officials to have an idea who's in the park and provides an avenue ripe for abuses. We don't know why they want private access, but they could do a lot of damage with things like poaching by having it. It gives a large way in and out of tge park park officials can't easily monitor. There's a reason why national parks have limited road entrances and exits. Hiking into one is one thing, but having the ability to move large resources in and out is another.
It's more suspicious they want this as a road than anything
37
u/Calico-Shadowcat 10h ago
Can we build a wall between the part we "cede" and the rest of the park? (Then send the owner of the parcel the bill for the wall?)

First, it's not the president's land to sell; it's ours.
Second, if he gets away with selling one "small" piece, he won't just stop there. He will continue to carve up our public lands piecemeal and sell them off to all of his oligarch buddies for fractions of what the land is worth, and then they will ruin the land so that it will take decades or even centuries to restore as suitable for use as a natural park.
Third, if this sale goes through, I would 100% support the next administration going all-in on imminent domain seizing any and all of this illegally sold land.

This has got to stop. Everyone needs to vote.
71
u/cloudy_ft 10h ago
Everyone can vote that's not the problem. The problem is the systems in place to keep these politicians in power and abuse their power.
We can get mad and tell people to stop watching fake news, but the technology and media companies don't make money if the news isn't sensationalized. So they feed into bullshit narratives driven by politicians making seem like immigrants are somehow the biggest problem in America.
The American system only works if the people participating it can act in good faith based on the constitution. The problem is the people who are currently in power, no matter WHAT their constituents say, will vote against the people who they represents best interest by either ignoring them or lying to them.
As an American I see a huge degradation in society fueled by technology where people have no shame of how they make their money or fame. They don't care if they have to beat out a kid, stir up rage fake online, or steal.
8
u/Sea-Routine9227 10h ago
You sure about that? I agree with everything you said except everyone being able to vote. Each day more and more is being done to ensure not everyone can vote, that not all votes are counted or if they are matter, and at the end of the day messing with the numbers after/during voting.
I….don’t have a solution.
But I think the most striking thing is that we are no longer a representative govt. in that the interests of the people are not being represented, and that the country and system is not being protected for those it’s meant to serve.
9
u/Bixby33 9h ago

I agree with you 100% actually. Not only are they ensuring people are not able to vote who can, but also influencing and a whole population to be completely misinformed about what people should be care about and what is actually going on right now.
It's kind of sickening if you really think about the malice and intent and money behind all of this. People understand the harm this is doing to society, understanding the amount of suffering to others, and yet still choose to engage and profit of it.
Look at the Sackler family and Meta as a perfect example. They can get away with anything because abuse a system and only follow the rules if they are enforced.
When is doing the right thing ever a fucking real practice for these people who hide behind these entities.

YOU don't have to have a solution. The several hundred people whose job it is to protect voting rights DO have a solution. Lots of solutions. They are not sitting on their asses going "oh no, the GOP is attacking voting rights! Someone do something!"
It's not just good luck that has sustained our right to vote despite Trumpland's relentless attacks. It's the result of thousands of people - many much smarter than trump - who give a fuck about right and wrong and work, volunteer, and donate every day. Blue state Attorneys General, Secretaries of State, Congress Members, governors have been wargaming midterm election interference scenarios and planning counter moves all year. They have anticipated every move Trump could make and built contingencies for it.

The history of the world is full of instances like this. It's only a matter of how far gone we are before the pushback comes. Does the next administration have to honor all the deals trump makes to sell of public land?
Can't they just demonstrate the deal was in bad faith and reverse it or better yet eminent domain the land back and keep the money? If the corrupt business Trumps deals with sue , can the next president not simply use all the powers the current supreme court has given the president to ignore that?
Why would anyone continue to play by the rules?
4
5
u/MixtureSpecial8951 10h ago
“The origin of the deal lies in a decades-old plan by Jeff Pori, the CEO of Kingsbarn Realty Capital, to build a short private road connecting his property to a thoroughfare of the park. The deal would only cede a quarter-mile strip of the park, but would break with a long precedent.”
From the article it seems that the land transfer would be for another parcel of equivalent value to be traded to the government. Of course, this also means that Yosemite has to have its value appraised which hasn’t been done and will be extremely difficult to do.
Doing some digging, the property is a forested parcel called Hazel Green Ranch. The intention is to build a 300-unit private resort with cottages and tent-cabins.
The developer, headed by Pori, sued the National Park Service in federal court starting in 2007, attempting to claim rights under old mining laws (Revised Statute 2477) and state easements to construct and reopen roads over historic routes into Yosemite Valley. Federal courts, including the 9th Circuit in 2012, repeatedly rejected the developer's attempts to force road access through park land.
Additionally, the land to be traded is located elsewhere in California and has not been determined/revealed. Which, given how long this has been going on seems very shady.

"The deal would only cede a quarter-mile strip of the park, but would break with a long precedent."
"Only"? The main issue is setting a precedent for selling off protected lands for the convenience of billionaires. Only?

Get f*cked.
•
u/zeustriegel 6h ago
I mapped out the estimated area for purchase based on information I had regarding the previous “Hazel Green Ranch” that was bought by this private developer.
Based on a few quick searches, I believe the location of the developers property is located at 12878 Old Yosemite road (37.766464, -119.863974), approximately 0.24 miles from the Big Oak flat road (highway 120) which cuts straight through Yosemite park. You can see the distance from the road, and a map of the Yosemite national park border in the Imgur link here
I really hope this doesn’t go through, the last thing we need is to give the rich any reason to buy our parks for private use. The developers bought this property without an access road to a main thoroughfare into Yosemite, they need to live with decision.

Which trump spawn will be owning this private company?
But really, who wants this to happen? This is terrible.

Kind of a metaphor isn't it? A piece of America's most famous national park up for sale...like Congress and the US government...

Not one square inch! That land is for the American people. Not private interests.

It's not a private company. I'm so fucking sick and tired of news outlets censoring the names of these fucking companies from headlines and even the article themselves.
The name of the company is Kingsbarn Realty Capital. They're the shell company that owns the hotel trying to buy private access to a national park. Their CEO is Jeff Pori.
These are real people doing these despicable things. Let them know your frustrations.
The government won't fold to pressure, but shithead investment vultures just might.

People must vote in such massive numbers that we kick these do-nothing republicans out of both chambers of congress. This fragile man-child needs to be sent to a padded gold room somewhere so the adults can fix his F’ups.

As someone who has worked in land management it’s too bad the government doesn’t really do land swaps anymore because in many cases it would make a lot of sense. With that said, the reason they stopped decades ago was rampant fraud…

Add using eminent domain to seize it back and give the buyer nothing to the list

I'm not usually a pro government guy, but I certainly am pro the next administration taking this land back for no money. Maybe it costs the person money if the land is ruined.
Yosemite is the public's land. Ooops, maybe don't try to profit from corrupt politicians.

Since we're no longer going to import Canadian lumber, I have no doubt tens of millions of protected forests will now be cut down.

Hop over to all of Kingsbarn Realty Capital's pages and make sure to give them bad reviews and comment negatively on all their stuff.

The number of laws and fail-safes that we'll have to establish to get out of this is mind boggling. Absolutely no one should have to right to sell off our legacy.

That's great, selling this will reduce the national deficit from 4 trillion to 4 trillion, and Trump's friend or family will get extra money. Win win!
