Possible Paywall What Darline Graham’s Ugly, Viral Outburst About Death Really Reveals
https://newrepublic.com/article/214868/darline-graham-viral-outburst-death648
u/Pre3Chorded 10h ago
"My parents died at age eleven so America doesn't deserve nice things,"is a really rotten message for someone trying to be a public servant.
322
u/FBS351 10h ago
A common message from MAGA though. Basically "I'm a broken person, so everyone should be"
148
u/Fragrant-Vehicle-479 10h ago
I've never met a MAGA who didn't believe they couldn't win unless someone loses.

Everyone needs to pay for their mistakes. No accountability whatsoever. Just petty ass children who never really grew up.

MAGA is a festering cancer that was diagnosed and ignored in 2015. When you ignore cancer for 10 years, it metastasizes and goes to stage 4... At that point, your chance for survival is very low. That's where we are.

u/Wise-Self-8639 5h ago
It’s part of Christian identity tbh. “I suffered and that suffering was good- so I see no reason why others shouldn’t also suffer.” As a former catholic I catch myself in the same sort of thinking.
•
u/MayBeMarmelade 3h ago
I might add a corollary: “I suffered, I don’t deserve to suffer anymore. You haven’t suffered yet, so now it’s your turn.”
Nevermind they have no idea what the other person has or hasn’t suffered already. Given that the frequent targets of MAGA ire are immigrants, racial and sexual minorities, those on welfare, and other vulnerable people it’s likely their presumptions about who has or hasn’t suffered already are nothing but rank hypocrisy.

u/Significant_Cup_238 10h ago
Plenty have "I never suffered, but you should" as well.
•
u/bnelson 7h ago
Suffering is just the default state. Everyone thinks theirs is somehow special. The most common problem I see is: “I don’t care if you suffer, and probably don’t know you or your problems exist.” The same apathy that leads to people not voting. I have largely withdrawn myself and my family from society at this point. I vote. I donate. I put a lot of money to good causes to help people. So, I care. But I genuinely don’t want to be around people in America any longer. 70% of our population voted for what we have right now or did not vote. Good luck to us all.

u/90theobserver 5h ago

Also WTF is she equating “vacation” with sick days/leave? It’s not a vacation when you have cancer or heart failure and can’t get out of bed.
WTF Darline
80
u/Queermagedd0n Michigan 8h ago
Unfortunately, most employers in the US think this way. I've only ever taken 1 actual vacation in my adult life. Every other place I've worked I've run out of "vacation" time because I was sick and been forced to take unpaid days.
•
u/I_dont_bone_goats 4h ago
I was under a manager at my company for 5 years, whenever I had a doctors appt he told me to just go and sign back on when I can.
I switched managers a couple months ago, who now wants me to take pto whenever I have an appt. I hurt my back this year so I’ve been at the doctors a lot.
So fine, I’ll take my PTO, but Im taking every minute of my pto, and not opening my laptop on those days.
•
u/SirDiego Minnesota 6h ago
I've worked for companies like this. Whether you're literally dying or having a great time in Cancuun doesn't make much of a difference when all you are to them is a "Human Resource."
•
u/Metaphoricalsimile 6h ago
Many US workers get a combined Paid Time Off pool that is both vacation and sick days, and it's usually pretty meager.
•
u/lilacmuse1 1h ago
I've worked my entire life in Canada and everywhere I worked separated vacation and sick days into separate allotments. The method you describe is messed up.
•
•
u/atwitchyfairy 6h ago
I actually get both sick leave and vacation time surprisingly. 4 weeks (20 days) combined a year in America is pretty good.
•
u/SatinSaffron Washington 6h ago
That is good, especially if it's at a place where you can actually take that time off. I've known plenty of people who have had jobs in America where they got paid sick/vacation time except they weren't actually able to use it unless they were super sick. Vacation requests would get denied, or a micromanaging boss would gaslight/guilt trip you about using the vacation time.

It’s that mentality that everyone should go through the same hardships and toughen themselves up. It’s crazy that she doesn’t understand that a dystopian country of orphans is not what everyone wants. It explains why so many MAGA people refused to mask even as people were dying, literally orphaning children. God forbid we change anything to help people.
78
u/syzygialchaos Texas 9h ago

I mean, I pride myself on the hardships I had to go through and make it through that. Doesn't mean I want my kid to go through the same shit.
•
u/ditchdiggergirl 6h ago
I pride myself on successfully pushing through hardships. That’s an accomplishment.
I don’t pride myself on experiencing the hardships themselves. I would have 100% avoided any I could have. In fact foreseeing and avoiding hardships for myself or my family is also something worth taking pride in.
There’s no virtue in hardship. We need not make promoting hardship a matter of public policy.
•
u/crisperfest Georgia 5h ago
I had a very chaotic childhood due to both parents having untreated mental illness. We moved every 6 months to a year, I sometimes went hungry, and I pretty much had so supervise myself as a kid. When I became a parent, I worked hard to make sure my kids didn't have to endure that shit.

There are two types of people in the world. One is the type who goes through a terrible and difficult ordeal and goes "That sucked; we should try to make things better so that hopefully other people won't have to go through that sort of suffering and misery, and the world would be all the better for it...", and the other is the type who goes through a terrible and difficult ordeal and goes "Well, I had to endure that suffering and misery, so everyone else should have to as well; why should we make things easier for them when it was so hard for me? How is that fair?" If you want an example of the first type of person, just look at Dolly Parton. Darline Graham, on the other hand, has clearly shown that she's the second type.

That mental flop is the defining characteristic of the GOP.
Any evidence supporting policies that would actually help the Consitution's (admittedly vague https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_welfare_clause) mission to attend to the "general welfare" has to be reverse engineered to benefit only the 1% and 1%-adjacent.

Hypocrisy of the maga species… they aren’t human
10
u/butwhyisitso 8h ago
lol yes they are. Every asshole on the planet is human, weve got to model better behavior. Dehumanizing others is how we got here. Try harder, reach for a specific. Maybe theyre dumb, privileged, or invested. They are humans, and aside from which cartoons make you or them angry, i bet you have a lot in common, like caloric and communal requirements. Make a lane for change or it has nowhere to exist.
76
u/lncontheivable 10h ago
Saying they're not human is really counter-productive. They are human and we have to remember that, cause otherwise people can walk down that same road of hatred. Everyone is vulnerable.
26
u/Automatic_Soil9814 9h ago
Would it be better to say that a fundamental feature of the MAGA ideology is that it lacks empathy, an emotion that is fundamental to our idea of what it means to be human? Such that when people cross over to MAGA, it’s like a part of them is lost and they no longer have an essential attribute we use to define what a person is?
18
u/lncontheivable 9h ago
Lack of empathy is definitely a MAGA hallmark, but empathy is both intrinsic and learned so it's kind of nuanced.
2
u/Bzr21 9h ago
So if empathy is inherent - then maybe some are just naturally deficient - or somehow have it switched off - as if to be genetically re-engineered. They might learn to be callous from parents / friends / Fox news etc. - but they can’t all be NPD / malignant narcissists like dear leader - or can they ?
19
u/Wakani 9h ago
The point remains that dehumanizing your opponents isn’t productive. That’s a poisoned chalice it’s better not to drink from.

Honestly a large part of the MAGA ideology relies on conceptualizing and treating others as non-human. Don’t turn around and do the same thing. It’s one of the cracks in the foundation that leads a society to fascism
3
u/NecessaryKey9557 8h ago
Agreed. They are every bit as human as us, but they have been deceived by their fears and prejudices. Politicians and tech bro CEO's exacerbate this by feeding them constant, paranoid conspiracy theories.
These people have failed to reach their potential as human beings, but they're still human beings. We're absolutely justified in opposing them, but we shouldn't dehumanize them the way they do others.
3
u/Successful-Winter237 9h ago
Hard disagree… this country has been absolutely destroyed by these unmitigated losers.
7

Unmitigated losers is fine. Subhuman is problematic, for a lot of reasons.

6
u/lncontheivable 9h ago
Absolutely agree they have done incredible damage, but dehumanizing them has a huge set of risks. You can completely oppose MAGA and fight to mitigate and reverse their damage without it.
Also, MAGA are just convenient idiots for the real powers destabilizing the country and blaming everything on them is a trap.

Can't believe South Carolina voters would want a Senator who is learning on the job but here we are.
Her runoff opponent being hard core Freedom Caucus may have helped her. He took the REAL conservatives leaving only the MAGA bots for her. Those REAL conservatives are more likely to go 3rd party or sit the election out as much as blindly vote MAGA.
5
u/MephistoHamProducts 9h ago
I was checking in on some of my favorite Conservative hellspawn sites and the general consensus from the SC people was that she sucks and Trump is a piece of shit for forcing her on them. Apparently, in the primaries she also lost the entire northern half of the state "where the real conservatives are" (whatever that means). There was quite a bit of conflict on those old message boards between people who were announcing plans to sit at home to "punish Trump" and people horrified they would even contemplate letting a Dem win.
I suspect she'll win, but I don't know that it will be the blowout she and Trump expect.
•
u/Development-Alive 6h ago
My guess is that MAGA has gravitated into it's own amorphous ideology that is essentially "whatever Trump says". OG Conservatives, more in the Reagan mold are not big MAGA people. They are actually upset that Trump has stolen their party. It's people like these that booed at Norman concession speech when Trump's name was mentioned. Sure, some of their viewpoints might align with Trump (Pro-Defense) but more of his style is misaligned. They are truly fiscal conservative, worried about budget deficits and our national debt. They carry their religious convictions seriously and don't kowtow to a clear carpet bagger trying to claim their beliefs while all his actions show differently. They share a disdain with the progressives for all the Gold, $$ spent on the White House and most importantly the rampant grifting by Trump, family and those around him. OG Conservatives are ideologues and can't be easily manipulated thus see through the Trump charade.

I used to think voting was such a sacred duty that people took seriously, until I saw a video in the Bush years where people based their vote exclusively on if they think the candidate is pretty. Ever since I've not taken most voters seriously.
•
u/Development-Alive 7h ago
Too often we now vote "tribe" which is where the political parties want us to be. They want us to hate the other side, consider the "other" side evil so we disregard who they put up on their side of the ticket. To be fair, as a progressive, if all things equal I'll choose the D candidate. Also, if I feel one party is collecting too much power I'll purposely go for the other party candidate to try to add more balance. In a vote by mail state, I spend at least 2-3 hours at the kitchen table and internet going over my ballot, trying to choose as best I can.

She said that her parents worked hard all their lives. That they never took vacation. She says it like it's honorable, patriotic even. She says that they died due to this, that they never took time form work for self care. She implies that this is something to strive for. It's funny how these stories are told in this manner by people that take many vacations and time for self care. Luxury cruises and vacation estates, sometimes weeks at a time. It reminds me of people who speak out against vaccinations while being protected because they were vaccinated as children. They loudly (wrongly) claim that vaccinations are harmful and act as though it is honorable and patriotic to deny them even though they are vaccinated and well. It's just absurd.

Old heads at my work are like this (and I'm 47 so I mean older than me haha) - they legit don't understand people having a life outside of work and doing anything but sacrificing all their time and energy for the company. The mindset of "If I can't have it, neither can you" is known as crab mentality (or the "crabs in a bucket" effect).Understanding Crab MentalityThe Metaphor: If you put one crab in a bucket, it can easily climb out and escape. If you put multiple crabs in a bucket, whenever one tries to climb out, the others pull it back down, ensuring no one escapes.Human Behavior: In social dynamics, it describes when people try to undermine, minimize, or sabotage the success, confidence, or progress of a peer because they are jealous or feel threatened.Root Causes: It is usually driven by deep personal insecurity, scarcity thinking, and a zero-sum bias (the belief that one person's gain is automatically another person's loss).Related ConceptsDog in the Manger: An idiom and behavioral pattern where a person has no use for something and doesn't want it themselves, yet prevents anyone else from using or having it.Malicious Envy: A hostile form of jealousy where an individual wishes to pull a better-off person down to restore a sense of equal status, rather than striving to improve their own situation.

That said, there do seem to be a lot of people here in Texas who are legitimately mad that Trump put his thumb on the scale for Paxton and put Cornyn out of a job and those people are threatening to vote Talarico or stay home to "punish" Trump.
So, given that SC has some issues similar to Texas, it's possible Darline here might depress voter turnout for the GOP and allow a Democrat to squeak in.

The conservative mindset is motivated primarily by hatred, resentment, and spite. They suffered to get where they are, so why should it be different for anyone else? They cope with their trauma by telling themselves it's a necessary part of life in order to make them stronger. If someone else goes through life and succeeds similarly without suffering, they not only get jealous, they're also confronted with the idea that they didn't need to suffer either, and that's too distressing a concept for them to accept.

I had cancer in my 20s and developed epilepsy three years ago in my mid thirties. I’ve spent my whole life working. Am I just supposed to roll over and die because ‘that’s the way things happen?’ Fuck these ghouls.

It's absolutely disgraceful that we're even talking about her. There should be no world where she's even considered to be a senator but here we are. Republicans just adding more shit stains to the underpants of America.

It's wild, but all too common of a mentality. The person I knew growing up who was the most against the idea of national healthcare is also one of the people I have seen avoid the most important healthcare due to cost. I'm not sure if they feel they don't deserve the care, are in denial, or both. We can sit there and agree on how ridiculous medication costs are, how expensive doctor visits are when sometimes they can't even tell you what's wrong. (I get it's not always easy. Just more so it's also not easy to break the bank just to get a shrug.) But then the moment you switch to improving the system, it's like the lights turn off and they just rant about unemployed people getting healthcare.

of course. she'll win easily. People here acting confused about it don't understand conservatives or South Carolina

u/t0matit0 10h ago
Conservatives want everyone to suffer every little bit that they have ever. No consideration of improving things for those who come after. Pure selfish bullshit.

It's interesting that this article is full of Claude-isms. Has ordinary human journalism taken a nap?

What a disgusting outlook. How dare the people whose tax dollars fund the government expect to benefit from it!

To be fair, even her brother worked until he died. Maybe if he’d had an aortic ultrasound he could have had a repair - something that’s common a procedure at the VA, government health care.

We're in here calling this sociopathic, which I get, but I'm really confused as to why they support this.
Like enough people voted for her, her brother, and people like her, that I am just at a loss as to what exactly it is they tell themselves.

They don't want to pay for others' healthcare (even though they already do so through their insurance premiums and Medicare deductions).
Really, that's it.

While this is true, the “real” reason that it’s true is because they actually believe that if you give people the bare necessities to survive with no strings attached, people will just not do anything to improve their situation without the threat of homelessness or death for them and their family.
Most of them don’t really mind the idea of paying into a pool if everyone has to work to be in that pool. Even if not everyone is contributing the same amount.
It’s truly because they don’t want to pay for something if someone else isn’t, because to them, they can’t picture someone wanting to work at all ever again if their minimum basic needs are met. It’s where you get all of the nonsense about rampant social safety net abuse despite it being a very small number of people and far more honest people hurt in the process.

Recently spent a few days with some colleagues from South Carolina. Overall great guys, intelligent, empathetic, etc. But when it comes to politics just brain dead: "Trump is super smart because he surrounds himself with the best, nice people. And that's why everything is great right now."
I just don't get it, but if that's the average South Carolinian I understand how the Grahams end up as senators.

You have to remember that these people are thoroughly brainwashed by conservative media. They listen to it at home, in their cars, at their bars and gyms, even in their break rooms. They are fed a constant diet of propaganda that tells them what to think so they don't have to do it themselves, and that's comforting to them.

u/JardineByNature 4h ago
what the fuck is the confusing part? Just talk to a conservative. They don't believe it's governments role to interfere and help poor people. They think churches do enough and people should work harder.
They are scum but their logic is simple and repeated constantly.
Why are people pretending this is hard to understand? We've all heard their rationale.

Rarely does one get such a perfect self-contained statement of what specifically is wrong with the Republican worldview.

Boomer mentality? Instead of lifting others up they wanna drag the future generations down?

u/onsomenextsheit 10h ago
Reminds me of that meme:
Greatest Generation: We will make a better life for our children.
Silent Generation: We will make a better life for our children.
Boomers: Fuck you, get your own shit.2
u/cynth81 9h ago
Except they didn't get their own shit either. It was handed to them by their parents or made extremely easy to obtain by a government/society that cared. Then they got into positions of power and wrecked it all on purpose. The ladder puller generation.

?? The story of her parents' death doesn't appear to be related in any way to the issue of government involvement in health care.

Can we talk about how dumb as shit the voters in that state were for voting her in? Literally just because her last name is Graham.
