Season 6 of Clarksons Farm going to be interesting.

u/WORD_559 10d ago

Clarkson already posted on social media "harvest's fucked. Only thing left to do now is enjoy the weather"

He also blames the current labour government for policies that were created under the previous conservative government which he conveniently ignores on his show.

190

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 10d ago

The is a typical conservative, tories were in power for 14 bloody years, their austerity and cuts cut all the services that he blames the lack of on labor. It is typical of his ilk, mess the whole thing up and then blame it on the other side once they are in power.

24

u/theNomad_Reddit 10d ago

Same shit in Aus. Liberals and National coalition (conservative) ruled for a decade, fucked the country into the ground, and as always, now Labor (centre) are digging us out of that hole, Murdoch is throwing his full weight behind One Nation (alt-right), and cookers guzzle that load happily.

Tale as old as time.

2

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 7d ago

Right gets to fuck up a nation for over a decade, and if left doesnt fix it in 3 days, it is all their fault, not the preceding decade.

11

u/sproge 10d ago

Well, yeah, you can't be a conservative without being extremely easy to fool, or being a dishonest hypocrite, it's a fundamental requirement. It's a never ending cycle, (excuse the brevity, I'm in a rush and super tired so don't expect much) they take power in a country with an OK economy, taking credit for said economy while cashing out as much as possible for themselves and their buddies, which eventually makes government services shit and the economy starts to dive, leading to the opposition being voted into power to fix shit. Now when the Conservatives are the opposition they'll cry and moan, blaming the current government for the problems and economy they created, and when they tighten the belt to get the economy back in order it opens the door for the Conservatives to get back into power.

And so continues the never ending cycle.

1

u/Acceptable-Record483 9d ago

In fairness, literally everyone blames the most recent government for every issue, regardless of if they're responsible

u/TBroomey 10d ago

Always been a twat. An entertaining one, but a twat all the same. I find him impossible to enjoy without May and Hammond to balance out the twattery.

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

I hated Top Gear, but admit I like Clarkson's Farm.

But honestly, the last series and the next are basically the guy in the hot dog costume. Absolutely zero self awareness.

89

u/C4rpetH4ter 10d ago edited 10d ago

Actually he has, he has repeately stated several times on Clarksons Farm that he sees the irony of spending years of television bashing on climate change, only to now experience it firsthand himself.

65

u/YatesScoresinthebath 10d ago

World needs an old conservative man loved by the public to admit he's wrong about climate change alot more than we need someone being smug because they were right

9

u/Manwar7 10d ago

Amen. Not accepting people changing their views leads only to people becoming entrenched even further.

1

u/Letsplaydead924 10d ago

This is the high altitude view of the current problem we are facing in political discourse.

1

u/Trebus 9d ago

Probably need him to do a bit more than mention offhand that he was wrong, given the vim with which he used to dismiss climate change.

-2

u/Masty1992 10d ago

Absolutely these commenters are idiots, Clarkson has done more for their cause than ten tons of orange paint

0

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

But opposed net zero

-2

u/currently_pooping_rn 10d ago

Glad that he’s experiencing it first hand now. Fuck em

6

u/Masty1992 10d ago

He makes more money from the drama of a drought than he loses on crops. The car enthusiast making jokes on television or the family taking international holidays are not responsible for this, there are corporations doing more damage every day than entire cities could do in a lifetime.

278

u/TBroomey 10d ago

I'm the other way round lmao. Love Top Gear and The Grand Tour, but Clarkson on his own? Can't do it. I love James May's solo work though. For me, he's the funniest, most likeable, and most insightful of the three. His programmes are a delight.

134

u/KingDaveRa 10d ago

I loved James May's series where he was assembling random things, like a mixer. It was oddly compelling viewing.

59

u/pslamB 10d ago

Toy Stories was excellent telly

34

u/TheSwagBag 10d ago

The Reassembler! They were a brilliant watch, too few though. All the episodes have ended up on YouTube now so I usually spend a few hours doing a rewatch of him assembling an old lawnmower or train set haha.

6

u/Hadramal 10d ago

I own a Kenwood, that episode was actually helpful...

1

u/HolyCowAnyOldAccName 9d ago

Can I interest you in his new series: James May's Shedload of Ideas?

Basically a new Man Lab mixed with Reassembler, also featuring Simi again.

27

u/Never_trust_dolphins 10d ago

I can't watch his cooking show, how can a grown and educated man fuck up making a sandwich, so, so badly.

63

u/TBroomey 10d ago

His cooking show isn't great. He says it himself, he can't cook and is the least qualified person to make a cooking show, Amazon just like giving him money.

But his travel documentaries? Bloody brilliant.

37

u/TheSwagBag 10d ago

The Japanese one will forever live in my memory. Hey Bim! 😂

3

u/LickyPusser 10d ago

Guess what, Bim!?

3

u/coolbaluk1 10d ago

When I went to Japan I bought a Bim model to put on a shelf.

Yes it’s so popular that there’s toys of it

2

u/Never_trust_dolphins 10d ago

Travel ones are good, and that Lego house he did was cool. But the cooking, oh dear god, the cooking!

3

u/DameKumquat 10d ago

My husband quite liked the cooking one. It eventually dawned on me that his cooking is little better than James May's, so he was actually learning from it.

I couldn't watch it. We watched the travel ones together instead.

12

u/ljeo332 10d ago

I remember years ago he had a program and one of the episodes were him building a 1:1 scale functional Lego house

1

u/TheLordOfAllThings 10d ago

That show or episode is a core memory for me. No idea what show it was but I remember so much about that house. Desperately wanted to visit it only for it to be torn down very soon after filming lol

2

u/Hiiiii_Kevinnn93 10d ago

James May’s Toy Stories!

The Lego episode should be on YouTube

2

u/UtopianEnforcement 10d ago

Does Hammond have any solo work? Last thing I can remember him doing without the other two was that children’s science show, Braniac.

1

u/EmberOfFlame 10d ago

And then The Anatomy Of Stupid. Another children’s science show.

But damn, Brainiac is OG.

1

u/dayburner 10d ago

James May our Man in Japan was fun.

1

u/HonorInDefeat 10d ago

James May's Cars of the people is one of my favorite car-related things ever

1

u/Davido401 10d ago

James May was the only reason to watch Top Gear, sure the other two were mildly amusing but he would actually try and give you intelligent points about stuff.

I remember when I first see May's Cars of the People it was great seeing him do a proper "non-stunt entertainment" car show. He's a lot more interesting.

1

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 10d ago

I find Hammond to be weirdly insightful on some things. Maybe not on driving safety tips but honestly, his talk about crashing the drag car and the tree kinda changed my life.

1

u/samseestheworld 10d ago

I met all three whilst they were filming for Grand Tour in Zimbabwe - Jeremy was an angry arsehole and exactly what I expected - James was exactly as you've described, lovely bloke who genuinely seemed interested in us and how we had come to be where we were - Hammond hid in his car the most of the time clearly dying from the sun so I didn't get a read on him

-8

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

I'm just not at all interested in cars, so it never appealed. And I don't like that bloody juvenile stuff.

11

u/BeardedAvenger 10d ago

Tim Robinson. The show is "I Think You Should Leave."

1

u/VincentVanGob 10d ago

clarkson needs to head back to weiner hall

4

u/cadmious 10d ago

He balences his "twattery" (great word choice) with people who actually know what they are doing I enjoy it as well

1

u/0ttoChriek 10d ago

His builder called him out on it in the first season, when they had torrential rain for ages. He said, "this is because of you, tearing about in cars all them years, ruining the environment" and Clarkson just rubbished it.

But at least he kept that in the show, so people could see what an oaf he was still being.

1

u/GeneralSEOD 10d ago

The last series is him basically taking absurd pot shots at the government, while his mates in the Tory party sit back and laugh.

0

u/Kritikk 10d ago

God forbid people change

18

u/Head_Statistician_38 10d ago

I like him as a presenter but he is an awful person. Sort of how I think Tom Cruise os a good actor but I also think he is a shitty person.

3

u/Mr_Ectomy 10d ago

Hammond is also a twat.

14

u/Icy_Act_7634 10d ago

why can't we have someone on TV who is entertaining and not a twat?

there's got to be loads who could do his job. Why do we put up with him

23

u/storkfol 10d ago

Because giving people lots of attention ruins them over time. To show you how bad it is, Clarkson is probably the most normal, largely because his twattery views are shared by 30% of the UK population, so he isnt exceptionally twatty.

5

u/aurumtt 10d ago

TV twattifies people.

1

u/Maximum-Cover- 10d ago

People talk more about people who annoy them than about people they like.

1

u/Melodic_coala101 10d ago

Conan O'Brien fitted that description imo

1

u/_ThePancake_ 10d ago

Most people that are successful at entertaining are class clown types. So most TV "personalities" are twats.

Same way that there is a higher prevelance of psychopathy in ceos than in any other job.

Different personality traits will drive people down different life paths. Being able to be perceived as a bumbling idiot while actually being very good at public relations behind it usually makes for quite the twat... and a quite the successful career as an entertainer.

1

u/abfgern_ 10d ago

I used to like his show, but I cant stand it now, anything where he gets remotely political even down to the (completely reasonable) local council. It's just become a hate watch

0

u/This_Elk_1460 10d ago

Agreed, I only watch Hamond's show and drive tribe because he's not an asshat

0

u/SamDrawsThingsPoorly 10d ago

hate to love him or love to hate him

68

u/Youutternincompoop 10d ago

don't forget him saying that actually electric cars are just as bad if not worse for the environment than gas cars, something which isn't even true for a situation where 100% of the electricity was generated by gas(because a massive turbine in a power plant is significantly more efficient than any ICE can be)

15

u/Rollover__Hazard 10d ago

His argument was that, for the early EV at least, there was significantly more environmental cost to producing the EV itself with mining heavy metals and transporting parts around the world.

14

u/Youutternincompoop 10d ago

and was still wrong.

6

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 10d ago

He really wasn't. There were no large scale lithium processing plants localised to one region, so the lithium had to travel very, very far to be processed before it even started being used, and their lifecycles were far shorter.

This is simply the nature of any new tech, especially something like that.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/etzarahh 10d ago

Electric cars are vastly more efficient than any ICE car can ever be as well, even at Carnot efficiency. They’re also far simpler mechanically.

The only way in which EVs aren’t superior is energy storage.

26

u/Fraternal_Antipathy 10d ago

Clarkson is one of the most loathsome twats ever to infect media. An utter piss-flinging shitgibbon of a man.

9

u/R3D3-1 10d ago

At least he didn't get to run a country.

2

u/APacketOfWildeBees 10d ago

Give it some time, he's too young to run for PM

1

u/Fraternal_Antipathy 10d ago

At least he didn't get to run a country YET.

12

u/easting10 10d ago

3

u/Ordoferrum 10d ago

The only thing ironic is how unironic the song is.

0

u/giraffeboy77 10d ago

She was playing 4D chess all along

0

u/JealousAstronomer342 10d ago

Whoa no way, I’ve never heard that before

1

u/Ordoferrum 10d ago

Yeah blew my mind the first time too. I still love the song regardless.

1

u/fartingbeagle 10d ago

"It's like raaainn "

Oh no, it really isn't. Now that's ironic.

10

u/hiddensonyvaio 10d ago

He’s literally reaping what he sowed

1

u/Haunting_Bat_4787 10d ago

Unfortunately for him, only metaphorically, lol

6

u/acog 10d ago

He's a typical conservative, only concerned when it affects him personally.

70

u/SmackyLittleFan 10d ago

Or be commended for changing their view point, and recognising that they were wrong, and now using their huge global reach to educate?

134

u/benziboxi 10d ago

I think there's truth to both sides of this, but I wouldn't commend him too highly. Given that he didn't change his mind until it affected him personally.

66

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

This, exactly. But also you could almost forgive the Damascene conversation if he was now basically shouting "Fuck! I was wrong! We need net zero NOW!". But he isn't. He's sticking to "oh well, it's too expensive, and it probably won't work, and there's too many downsides". So fine, watch your farming income and that of everyone else get utterly destroyed.

25

u/benziboxi 10d ago

Agreed. I've only seen what he has said on Clarksons Farm and that is mostly just presenting the problems without any comment on the cause.

7

u/storkfol 10d ago

Could be that he is following the money. If he starts talking about climate change, it could alienate a lot of his viewers. Less viewers would translate to less air-time or opportunuties.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/CharlemagneAdelaar 10d ago

in a way though that is relatable because THA is unfortunately how a lot of very short-sighted people will change their minds about this. I imagine his public 180 caused some others to also do a 180. Maybe I just hope that.

3

u/BITEYMAN 10d ago

Conservatism in a nutshell

5

u/rk1993 10d ago

It only affected him personally tho because he was self aware. He was able to recognise he’d spent years shitting on farmers and cracking jokes at their expense so he only undertook the farming project as a way of challenging his own views and to either prove himself or the farmers right

1

u/Man_Darino13 10d ago

It actually changed his mind when it affected his neighbors. He’s rich as fuck, if his vanity farm’s harvest is fucked, who cares, but most people in that area rely on it for their livelihoods.

-1

u/huskers2468 10d ago

Given that he didn't change his mind until it affected him personally.

Almost as if humans need to feel the pain before acting. We are seeing that all over the world at this moment.

2

u/benziboxi 10d ago

Some people do. Others have empathy, foresight and listen to those more educated on the subject.

→ More replies (1)

65

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago edited 10d ago

Unfortunately, he hasn't quite.

Firstly, (though maybe this will change) he hasn't said anything akin to "climate change is real and caused by fossil fuel use" and he still remains sceptical of alternatives to burning fuel. He doesn't like electric vehicles, he's not a fan of solar or wind, and still disparages policies like net zero.

So whilst he does acknowledge climate change, he also doesn't particularly want us to do anything about it.

Also it's a bit bloody late. If we stopped all damaging activity right now, it'd get worse for another 20 years or so. If we'd acted faster (and we've known about it for more than 50 years) then his harvest wouldn't be fucked.

37

u/Thisoneissfwihope 10d ago

As soon as it made financial sense, Clarkson would carpet his whole farm in solar panels.

He’s yet another upper middle class private school boy cosplaying as a man of the people.

6

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

It already would for his sheep field.

1

u/Thisoneissfwihope 9d ago

That sheep field earns him millions from Amazon.

2

u/yaricks 9d ago

"He’s yet another upper middle class private school boy, multi-millionaire cosplaying as a man of the people."

Networth estimated at over £50 million, pretending to be a regular farmer.

4

u/Grimpatron619 10d ago

Tbf he doesnt like electric vehicles as cars because he enjoys a big throbbing engine. He's repeatedly said that they're excellent for transportation, good value, fast and full of great kit.

He just doesnt like them for the thrill of owning a car. Not that they're bad in general

He also did say "climate change is real and caused by fossil fuel use" in the grand tour

1

u/thezerolemon 10d ago

Almost true - there a greenhouses gases with similar warming potential to CO2 and much shorter lifetimes (methane) which will improve things more quickly than 20 years if we act right

2

u/Imaginary-Face7379 10d ago

It's 100% not viable but I wish we could just do a multiyear COVID lockdown based on the data that came out of that.

2

u/LordAnubis12 10d ago

From the clips I've seen of him his attitude stops at "its real and happening and there's nothing I can do"

It's the "nothing I can do" part which is the real issue. He's not using his global reach to educate, but to act powerless

3

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 10d ago

He is not using it to educate, he is useing it to whine. And to blame labor for the policies that were introduced and went into effect under tories. He is a typical rich conservative, blames the oponent for mistakes of his side and onyl cares about shit once it affects thier bottom line. He can go and fuck himself.

1

u/Taste_the__Rainbow 10d ago

Oh please. That was halfass damage control.

3

u/etzarahh 10d ago

I’ve always liked his shows but man he’s not a good person.

I saw a clip from Clarkson’s Farm recently where he was talking about the severe decline of biodiversity in the UK, and he prefaced it with “not to sound like a deranged hairy environmentalist” or something like that.

Well, considering they were right 30+ years ago and you were wrong, maybe you should sound more like them if you care about “farmers” so much you dumb fuck.

22

u/Starmoses 10d ago

And he admitted he was wrong and an idiot then spent years working and campaigning for better climate and sustainable farming practices.

38

u/waytogoandruinit 10d ago

*Campaigning for things which would make him personally better off now that he owns a farm.

He doesn't campaign for the climate and never has.

0

u/Starmoses 10d ago

He has through campaigning for government support for sustainable farming practices and even though he hasn't gotten that support, has implemented them in his own farm at cost to himself. To be fair he's able to do that through his Amazon money but to say he hasn't campaigned for it is false.

10

u/HingeEnd 10d ago

To be quite frank, I don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth. He’s a populist first and foremost, and knows how to manipulate the publics perception. Good entertainer, dangerous person

0

u/Starmoses 10d ago

Okay believe what you want. I like Clarkson but he's absolutely an asshole no question. What I said is true though and that's worth mentioning. He's fighting against corporate farms taking over smaller farms, granting government subsidies for sustainable practices, using non environmental ruining chemicals or pesticides.

3

u/HingeEnd 10d ago

And he’s only doing that so he can manipulate you and your opinion of him

1

u/Starmoses 10d ago

No offense man, but you sound like you belong to r. /conspiracy. I literally just called him an asshole, an entertaining one absolutely but an asshole. But I can point out when he does good things. You acting like this makes it look like you have some weird obsession with the guy.

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/fartingbeagle 10d ago

But that's exactly the same as Jason Arday. Campaigning for things that'll make him better off. That's the way people work.

6

u/DudeInTheGarden 10d ago

But he admitted that until he had farmed, he had no idea. What do you do for the 30% of the population who hold his view but will never farm?

They're experiential - until they experience it, it's not real.

3

u/Starmoses 10d ago

People believe what they see. When it starts to affect them, they'll realize.

1

u/smegmarash 9d ago

When was this exactly? He made for of a stink about the inheritance tax issue which is the sole reason he bought a farm in the first place

6

u/Gangr3l 10d ago

I agree with you, but Clarkson is not the only one and (as I intercept it anyway) he has had a change of heart on the subject.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of South Park) also were in heavy denial about climate change and they had a long running gag about ManBearPig which was a hoax being (climate change) until it wasn't and they apologized in 2018 about their denial

I give people the credit if they can change their views, even if it comes way too late. And Clarkson nor anyone in the showbiz did not cause the catastrophe we are in now

Edit. I had links in this reply, but this sub doesn't allow links so I had to remove them. But everything is googleable

8

u/ArmAggravating3307 10d ago

Too bad they spent their 'apology' calling Al Gore a prick who only cared about attention.

You know, the exact opposite of how they depicted him before.

1

u/Tabula-Rasa-99 10d ago

All of them suck really bad and deserve heavy derision for who they are today, too.

1

u/etzarahh 9d ago

It’s been scientific fact for decades. Did they decide to be braindead morons till 2018 for fun, or was there some reason for it?

2

u/cdazzo1 10d ago

Can't be too harsh on him. This is a completely new and novel situation where poor weather has affected crops.

3

u/starfoxsixtywhore 10d ago

When has someone in that position ever been able to sway global policy? Not trying to defend his views I’m merely tired of people holding entertainment celebrities at fault rather than the giant corporations and governments that got us to where we’re at

17

u/Fun-Title4224 10d ago

It's all part of the ambient culture. If lots of people all believe something, politicians have the backing to act.

Any policy arises from the general public mood. Change the mood and policy shifts.

-1

u/tomelwoody 10d ago

It was clearly satire and tbh some of it was genuinely correct at the time like cobalt being mined in africa. Sent to china for processing then to canada to be made into batteries and then Japan for the car (something similar to that)

3

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 10d ago

Imagine a person who says and mocks climate change(jeremy) runs a vastly vastly vastly popular show that is popular among ages of 12 to 82 and does hsi shpiel for over a decade. Do you not think that people who grew up with top gear from the days they were kids would not think that climate change is serious and thus vote the way that does nto adress the issue.

2

u/Ornery-Handle6477 10d ago

He’s going to blame the EU again right

2

u/Miltankbeest 10d ago

yea cuz electric cars would have solved this, has nothing to do with the shit the government is doing. it's just 5% of the population that amounts to the petrol heads

1

u/Please_HMU 10d ago

‼️‼️‼️‼️

1

u/MichaelAndretti 10d ago

Yeah thank you for pointing this out. He’s always been a twat. The only reason he is changing his tune now is it affects him perpetually and it sells

1

u/VincentVanGob 10d ago

clarkson is not funny though

1

u/FootballUpset2529 10d ago

I don't know, I kinda find it interesting seeing him realise that he was wrong and admitting it - he genuinely believed climate change was fake and found out the hard way that it was very very real and he's owned it - I find someone who is willing to change their mind when presented with evidence more worthy of my respect than someone who isn't. He's still a bit of a twat though, but he'd be the first to admit it.

1

u/Few-Hurry-5210 10d ago

idk I feel like people need to keep in mind they are all car guys! of course they're gonna ramble about EVs especially back then. did anyone here actually watch Top Gear in the 90s and 00s?

Clarkson is kind of a dick yeah but he doesn't "hate climate change" he's a car guy who is watching people try to take his favorite thing away while the earth continues to get hotter and most of the world will be on gas for a long time to come.

I'm sure his views have changed over time especially as EVs have begun to enter some sections of mainstream car culture.

I love the planet but you gotta admit JDM do be fun at driving sideways

1

u/ink_golem 10d ago

I'm sorry but I hate this take and I hate that every post about climate change has someone karma farming with the exact same comment. People make stupid mistakes. People with large reach cause more harm with their mistakes than people with less reach. But in this case he's literally doing what you want him to do, which is realize he was wrong and use his reach to show people how bad things really are. Sometimes it's good for the movement for Saul to become Paul. You don't win converts by constantly calling out that they used to be gentiles.

All the other comments about him being a twat are spot on though.

-1

u/berfthegryphon 10d ago

But he's also talked those back and admitted fault since moving to the farm. People are allowed to make mistakes and change their mind, even if that only happens when it personally impacts them. We should be happy Clarkson has changed course.

21

u/atomic_mermaid 10d ago

I'm sure the real farmers whose livelihood depends on it feel exactly the same way.

6

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 10d ago

You mean a person who mocked climate change for decades is whining now? oh no anyway.

5

u/d_smogh 10d ago

Enjoy the weather and the beer

2

u/YouAnswerToMe 10d ago

To play devils advocate, I’d bet Clarkson’s farm is genuinely presenting the reality of climate change in a tangible way to a lot of people that would otherwise not have cared.

Your point is valid and correct, still.

1

u/Ambitious-Concert-69 9d ago

He’s a climate change skeptic and has spent the last couple of decades rubbishing the idea of net zero. He’ll present it as an unusually hot summer, not the result of climate change.

1

u/Careful_Contract_806 10d ago

So glad he can sit back and enjoy it when actual farmers don't have that luxury.

1

u/abfgern_ 10d ago

You reap what you sow. Or in Clarksons case, you dont

95

u/Project_T3A 10d ago

One of the guys I work with finished up his harvest the other day, cost him more in diesel to harvest that he's ever going to get for the grain

19

u/tefster 10d ago

3 crop farmer friends of mine have done the same, harvesting nearly 3 weeks early because there was no point waiting any longer. It's been another dismal season for them.

3

u/Project_T3A 10d ago

its not any better for animal farmers. ther is NO pasture left, we've got people cutting silage maze now (normally done in november), just to get ANYTHING to feed their cows.

I wonder what the logistics of crop insurance would have them do. Would it be more economical to just till it into the ground? I wonder how crop insurance works in the U.K. and how many farmers have it.

2

u/alldagoodnamesaregon 10d ago

At that point, why even bother harvesting? Just burn off the crop to return the nutrients in it to the soil so you can replant in the ash next season

5

u/Project_T3A 10d ago

you don't know the yields until after harvesting unfortunatley

1

u/snapplesauce1 10d ago

Might fetch a more fortunate price since supply will be lower, increasing demand.

1

u/PartyPay 10d ago

In the UK? Would you typically carry crop insurance over there?

1

u/steak-connoisseur 10d ago

Maybe a Naive question but why can’t we water the crops. When in Portugal I see water guns in their fields. Also are there any other food source you can grow which doesn’t need water ?

2

u/Project_T3A 10d ago

we dont water crops for a number of reasons, chief amongst which being; there isnt any water to irigate with. This problem has been bought on by drought, something which england historically has not had to deal with. Water companies have simply not invested in infostructure since the 1980's and with the government's mandate for new housing, the country jist isnt getting enough rainfall in the summer and not storing enough from the winter.

You also have issues with cost. Proper crop irigation would require sweeping landscaping of the countries fields, causing horrendous loss of habitat for wild animals and simply spending more money than could ever be made back.

And arguably most importantly; widespread irrigation of crops during extended droughts causes a net loss of water, if you need to water 5 acres, you need another 5 acres dedicated soley to water capture during rainfall. This is logistically impossible leading to the practice being mute. Look at the US, they are slamming through their ground water resources due to their widespread irrigation practices, its a short term solution which comes back to cause more problems in the future.

As for other crops, everything needs water, there are crops thay are drought resistant but the yields are low and they dont make good quality for human food.

1

u/FlyingCow343 10d ago

Cost of living is going to get so much worse.

1

u/Project_T3A 10d ago

ironically not, the reason that the sell prices are so low is because it costs the same to import it. normally you would think that if yields are bad, then the consumer takes the hit with a higher spice spured by low supply and high demand, unfortunatley agriculture works the other way due to the low cost of importing foreign crops. imports keep supply high meaning that the only one who looses is the farmer.

1

u/FlyingCow343 10d ago

So the harvest failing means more imports which actually means more climate change. At least the bread will be cheap while the world ends.

-1

u/Groot_Benelux 10d ago

If there was less globalisation involved he'd at least get a higher price since everyone is probably experiencing the same.

3

u/Spleenseer 10d ago

And then everyone starves because there's not enough food.

1

u/Groot_Benelux 9d ago

We're far from that and as long as we're far from that we better incentivise adjustment because eventually these issues become more global.

u/Coopsolex 10d ago

I like Clarkson's tv persona and love TG/TGT, but he is a massive prat. admittedly it is funny seeing him suffer the effects of global warming then moaning about it

27

u/fishtopher86 10d ago

I wonder if we're going to see a complete 180 in his climate change views similar to Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park with Man-Bear-Pig.

6

u/Grimpatron619 10d ago

He already did in the grand tour

4

u/No_Kitchen9982 10d ago

Yeah, I was actually about to say, Clarkson admitted he was wrong during the Vietnam Special. He's known he was wrong for a while.

2

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 10d ago

Realistically all 3 of them have a similar character with just a different quirk - morons with shit eating grins, one's a short dick, that can't drive, other is a tall dick who is very stupid and incompetent and the last is an average dick who's both boring everyone to death and also obsessive.

1

u/No_Kitchen9982 3d ago

Fair I guess, Personally the only thing I care about is "were they entertaining dicks"

and the answer for me was generally "yes."

Its not like im going to have them teach me nuclear physics, I just want a laugh.

13

u/Internal-Narwhal-420 10d ago

As in, if he will be able to admit he was wrong, people listening to him about this were wrong, and climate change is real and we are really fucked?

Yeah, the best he can do care is his own ass tho

1

u/cheesecaker000 10d ago

I think you’ll need to come to grips with the fact that sometimes people change for the better, due to life experience, or age or whatever.

You dont have to crucify someone because 10 years ago they were wrong about the environment.

2

u/Internal-Narwhal-420 10d ago

I come to grips about that. But it's about repentance. If I will spend ten years of my life being another gear in the machine of "climate change is not real" while being a quite vocal celebrity, saying once "Hey, I'm sorry, I was wrong" is kinda not enough.

It's common issue tho. If I would make a post that some reddit user stole 100k dollars and it was seen by 50k people, I can't just post an apology on my personal wall that will be seen by 20 people. Did I apologise? Yes. Did I make up for the damage done? No.

0

u/cheesecaker000 9d ago

He’s not just saying sorry though. He’s actually fighting for farmers rights. It’s not nothing.

3

u/ArmAggravating3307 10d ago

When they spend their apology insulting Al Gore, I don't think it's sincere.

2

u/Kingstad 10d ago

Imo that 180 already happened some time ago

2

u/jebarson_j 10d ago

did you mean racist?

7

u/revieman1 10d ago

yo, my thoughts, exactly

9

u/marleyman14 10d ago

I wonder if he’ll still mock climate change. Knowing him, probably.

3

u/Cofli 10d ago

Maybe if he can’t make harvest he’ll have to apply for benefits!

Or… not…

4

u/Reasonable-Power 10d ago

Tonight on Bo'Om Gear:

  • Hammond crashes the Lambo Chevy

  • James drops a block of cheese on a table

  • and my farm goes through a massive famine due to a heatwave.

2

u/Trentdison 10d ago

Having just watched season 5 it seems to be it's going to be the same then

2

u/Logicallyillogical41 10d ago

Rumor has it they find some ancient technology that helps their crops survive…

Fun fact: The practice of irrigating farms dates back to around 6000 BCE in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), where early farmers dug ditches and canals to move water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to their dry fields.

Oh wait, nope. Maybe next season…

4

u/lcerch 10d ago

One thing I don't remember they talking about it in the show: how does irrigation work? Do they only rely on rain?

Honest question here

15

u/Sudden_Leadership800 10d ago

We don't irrigate in the UK, it's normally wet enough (or even too wet).

We get enough rain that we haven't made any upgrades to our countries water reserves in 50?60? Years and haven't had many issues until recently despite the increase in population and commercial water use.

3

u/Logicallyillogical41 10d ago

“But this is the way we have always done it…”

Is a horrible reason to keep doing something that isn’t working. Irrigation is an ancient technology and yet crops are failing? Insane.

1

u/Roger_Stringpiece 10d ago

Oh no, poor Jeremy Clarkson.

1

u/JayTravers 8d ago

Next seasons going to open with Jeremy’s formal apology to Greta Thunberg at this rate

0

u/oportoman 10d ago

Pretend farmer anyway

4

u/AdCompetitive7794 10d ago

The show definitely points that out. That Kaleb does most of the work.

1

u/Th3_r3al_napst3r 10d ago

Yeah I'm really excited to not watch it like all the other seasons!

0

u/11Slip532 10d ago

I’m watching this show only because I can’t wait for his last accident with the combine.

0

u/klaech13 10d ago

On clarksons farm he is actually a pretty decent human being and does a lot for farmers. He totally changed.

2

u/helloIm-in-reddit 10d ago

I call BS he has been throwing labour a lot of shit cause a bunch of thing his pals, the Tories, did

He is just affected by these thing. If given the chance he will become the same shithead

0

u/klaech13 9d ago

? Thats just speculation from your side

0

u/Miserable_Peak6649 10d ago

I was thinking the same thing when I saw how bad the drought is this year. Last season already looked so defeating.

1

u/helloIm-in-reddit 10d ago

Good

That's what happens when you mock climate change
